{MIMM} Weekend Recap 09/20-09/22

September 23, 2013

Apologies are always marvelous right? So let me start this post off by saying I’m sorry. If in the past week any comments, emails, phone calls or texts you’ve received from me have seemed incoherent, my apologies, I was not in my own head. While I’d like to believe aliens took my brain captive in outer space, my excuse is way more lame. Remember that run I did last weekend where I had a bit of pain afterwards but nothing too serious? Well it became serious to a point where I was not able to move. In an effort to not end up in the same situation as last time I’ve stopped all physical activity (except walking), paid a visit to my chiropractor, and am dosing myself with a large quantities of pain killers and muscle relaxants. That last point is precisely why I haven’t been making any sense.

As much as I don’t like the idea of perpetually drugging myself, I still have to work and in general be a functional human being and it seems to be the only thing that helps. So for now if I seem high in my interactions with you, that’s probably because I am. I wish I had a better explanation for what is going on, but I really have no idea. My back and hip have a deep aching pain that make it hard to stand or sit for very long. It’s not fun and the more I think about it the more depressed I feel. So instead I’ve been indulging myself with good food, medication and friends. So far it’s working to keep me distracted. Let’s recap…

Midday work drinks on Friday that became end of day work drinks since wine + muscle relaxants don’t result in much productivity. Kids, don’t try this at home…

Celebrating my big brother’s birthday at Edulis. It’s always a good meal when a foodie and wino unite. For the record Edulis absolutely lived up to it’s reputation as one of the best restaurants in Toronto! Splurge on the tasting menu, it’s worth it.
Rain did not stop me and my foodie in crime/favourite hand model from getting in our food truck fix! Despite the puddles, AwesTRUCK 2013 was fantastic. On the menu: Fidel Gastro’s Root Beer Braised Short Ribs, Curried Beef, Chili Limeade, and South Asian Rice Pudding.
I am officially out of Quest Bars 🙁 I knew I had to do something very special with my last bar and Baked Pumpkin and Cookie Dough Oatmeal seemed like a pretty great idea. Damn was this good! Since I’m feeling generous, here is the recipe:

1/2 cup GF rolled oats
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp nutritional yeast (the trick!)
1/2 flax egg (1/2 T ground flax mixed with 1.5 T water and let sit for 5 mins)
1/4 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
8 drops of liquid stevia
1/2 cookie dough quest bar, broken up (or 1 T chocolate chips)
sprinkle of salt

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an oven-proof ramekin with non-stick spray. Combine all ingredients and add to ramekin. Bake for 20 mins.

To welcome the first day of fall Amy and I went apple picking! I stocked up on my favourite McIntosh and Golden Delicious apples and put together a new recipe for other Amy’s veggie & fruit of the month link-up. Excited for this one!
And of course I food prepped. I didn’t go too crazy for this week but here’s the jist of what’s on the menu: Arman’s Curried Tuna Patties (these are amazing!), Emily’s Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Miso Sauce, chopped fruits and veggies, no-bake mint chocolate protein bars and once again a big batch of David’s Tea Pumpkin Chai Steel-Cut Oats for breakfast.
I also took 3 bubble baths this weekend. I think I may replace working out with bubble baths from now on…

Thanks as always to the Diva for hosting us each week!

How do you handle being injured? Are you a total baby like I am? What’s the best thing you ate this weekend?

Ahh Davida I was not aware that you injured yourself and were/are in such pain- hope things get on the mend soon- but at the same time big props for taking a full 360 break from exercise!

Some amazing foodie action going here- topped with the icing (bee) on the cake (honeypot) getting into the fall spirit with Amy! Glad you liked the tuna patties buddy!

I like the idea of replacing workouts with bubble baths…you could be onto a new trend there…hmmm 🙂
Sounds like fall is in the air! I can’t wait to go apple picking. A local farm near us hosts an apple festival every year with all kinds of yummy apple desserts…I can’t wait!

And can I just say that I’m super jealous you got to go apple picking? And with another lovely blogger, at that?! I’m hoping to get my hands on some local apples as well this year.

I handle injuries by focusing on cross training – at least it satisfies that need to DO something active. And when that doesn’t work, a big glass of wine always helps.

I had a bubble bath this weekend too – while catching up on Real Housewives of Miami. Man I love trashy tv. 😀

I take medicine daily in order to sleep. Sometimes you just have to do things to get by.

My food was all bad. So the best thing I ate was grapes. You can guess about the other junk.

Oh no! So sorry you are in so much pain! I hope you start feeling better! Fyi, The Quest Bar recipe looks delish! I have tried microwaving the bars for 30 seconds but I never would have thought to make a recipe out of them!

Now you’ve got me craving a bubble bath! 🙂
I’m so sorry to hear about your hip and back pain. 🙁
    Have you tried massages or physical therapy? Loading up on pain killers sucks. So funny about the part where you said you were high- I just thought you were a looney tune. {complete sarcasm}

You and Amy are so cute. I love that you two get together so often. Makes me want a bloggy pal!

    Hope you feel better soon!

two things: ACUPUNCTURE AND MASSAGE. whenever i have injuries due to working out or just pulling a muscle, i call my acupuncturist and then head off to a massage. works every time! the acupuncture will promote natural healing and help you manage pain. if you want her name, email me …she’s at queen west (leslieville). hope you feel better!!!!

Oh honey!! I hope you get to the bottom of this issue with your back/hip soon…or at least get some permanent relief! I have had my FAIR SHARE of injuries over the last few years! Can you believe NONE of them were actually fitness/running related?! Of course, I’m not a runner anymore, but I used to average about 10-14 miles a week a couple of years ago…before I threw out my back getting a book out of my bookcase! I know…I’m ridiculous! I tend to be a bit of a baby when it comes to injuries, but I’m also stubborn and deal with a serious case of denial most of the time…which is why I am now on my THIRD break from the gym since my knee surgery! 🙁

As far as the rest of this post goes? HOLY SHIT! Root beer braised short ribs? Apple picking? AND THAT OATMEAL!!! Oh my gawwwwwwwd! I need a bowl…or TEN right now!
