So You Wanna Start Eating Healthier?

First let me preface this post by saying that I feel slightly awkward writing it. I have a fear of coming off as an “expert” when I am not one. This is a topic for another day, but I just want to say that I am not writing this on top of my soapbox. These are purely the tips that worked for me and I thought I might share them. They are not meant to be the holy grail of all things healthy.

Okay now that I’m off my soapbox, let’s tackle today’s topic: So you wanna start eating healthier? Where should you start?

This is a topic that has been on my mind quite a bit lately. I’m not sure what’s in the air but I’ve had a couple of readers and friends reach out to me asking for advice. Then I was fortunate enough to be interviewed for The Lifestyle Accountability Podcast (listen here) and not surprisingly they asked the same questions. I figured it might be worth sorting out my own answers and putting them all in one place.

So here goes…

Advice #1: Ask yourself “why?”
Perhaps you’re looking to lose weight (and need to) or maybe you’re trying to gain weight or muscle. Maybe you have health issues or possibly just want to take control of your health to prevent illness (or as much of it as you can control). Whatever your reason, think about it and write it down. Then decide what is realistic. If you’re trying to look like Giselle Bundchen you should probably stop reading now…if however you’re looking for ways to fuel your body in the right way and start feeling more comfortable in your skin, read on.

Advice #2: Start reading nutrition labels.
Don’t bother trying to control everything you ingest, but when you reach for a product at the grocery store read the nutrition label. I personally do not advocate calorie counting so that’s not what I look at. The first thing my eyes glance to is the ingredient list. Word to the wise, if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it. Try to buy products that use REAL foods and as few ingredients as possible. And generally anything that has sugar listed as the first ingredient probably isn’t something you want to be eating.

Advice #3: Get in the kitchen.
I don’t think that you have to cook everything you eat to be healthy. I’m a foodie so it would be a travesty if I only ate in. I tend to eat in on my weekdays and nights and eat out more frequently on the weekend. I personally love cooking, but I’m a firm believer that even if you don’t like it at first you will come to appreciate it over time. Ignore the naysayers declaring that healthy food tastes bad. It doesn’t have to if you find the right resources (more on this below). If you can, try to hit the grocery store once a week to stock up on the goods. Stick to the outer portions of the store when you can. This is where you will find the produce, proteins and other fresh ingredients. Avoid the middle sections, but not all packaged goods are bad. Like I mentioned above, you just need to be label conscious

Advice #4: You don’t need to do it all.
I cannot stress this point enough. I remember when I started caring about what I ate I literally went insane in the health food store. Goji berries? Chia seeds? Nutritional Yeast? I needed it all! And the reality is that I don’t use these ingredients all that frequently. Start by focusing on upping your vegetable and protein intake. Don’t limit your carbs but also don’t go overboard. You don’t need to eat a salad for every meal. I try to incorporate a salad a day. I’m not always successful at this, but when I do it’s a choice I can feel proud of. I talked a bit more about ingredients that are frequently used in my kitchen and which ones I think are important in this post.

Too much of anything is never a good idea. Eating all of your meals in sounds unbearably boring and eating all of your meals out may not be the wisest choice (or the most budget conscious). Similarly, eating perfectly healthy all the time will almost certainly backfire into a major bingefest in the same way that eating junk consistently will make you feel like junk. I recommend the BDD rule. Bread, drink, dessert. Pick two of the 3 and stick with it. Or two drinks…whatever floats your boat. I also recommend to occasionally give into your cravings (if a healthier substitute doesn’t exist). I was having a major craving for a burger and fries on Saturday, so I got it and enjoyed it. I didn’t feel the need to compensate for it. One “bad” meal doesn’t make you unhealthy just like one “good” meal doesn’t make you healthy.

comparing mealsAdvice #6: Seek out resources then soak them in with a grain of salt.
I say with a grain of salt because despite the number of “experts” out there, no one is an expert on yourself but you. You will hear people tell you that grains will kill you, that veganism is the only healthy diet and that 5 small meals a day is the only effective way to lose weight. For every true statement on health there is a camp out there preaching just the opposite.

That being said, there are SO many resources out there to help you get started on your healthier path.

Pinterest–>consider yourself warned. This site is a black hole. Start perusing the internet for recipes or tips you like and then pin them to your boards so you don’t forget about them. I tend to follow bloggers and icons in the health industry who have a similar mindset to me. They will also pin recipes and inspirations from others who have a similar mindset to them so it’s a great place to find new resources.

pinterestHealthy Aperture –> This is a website that amalgamates healthy recipes from around the internet. It’s like the healthy version of FoodGawker or Tastespotting aka healthy food porn

Healthy Food Blogs –> I have my favourites that I highly recommend scanning for recipes that you can make at home and don’t taste like cardboard.  And neither are their personalities (big factor for me):

Hummusapien                           Lexi’s Clean Kitchen                     Nosh and Nourish

The main takeaway here is that first you need to assess why you want to start living a healthier lifestyle then you have to do A LOT of research on how to achieve those goals. I won’t lie, it requires quite a bit of effort, but in time these choices will become intuitive. You will make choices that won’t work for you and you will make some that will stick. Most importantly, you have to keep searching until you find what works for you!

    I had never heard of this so called “BDD Rule”, but I love it! Since drinking is illegal in Kuwait, I guess my two choices will always be bread & dessert… which i’m 100% satisified with!

    I’m slightly embarassed to admit it took me a few moments to find your broadcast. It was cool being able to finally put a voice to a face. I really enjoyed listening and learning more about you as person and why you chose to live a healthy lifestyle.

    YES. This rocks and you rock. I love that you don’t see healthy as an all-or-nothing endeavor. To make the healthy choice MOST of the time is the best way to go. Real foods too!

    My advice: do your research and eat foods that are rich in nutrients. Just because it’s a 100 cal pack does NOT mean it’s good for you.

    I believe that when it comes to healthy eating everything in balance is very important. As you do, if I have a big craving to which I can’t find any healthier substitutions I will give in! It won’t kill me and it will help me stay sane. It’s true that if you deprive your body from what it wants it will backfire you!

    My special rule is that I don’t like to buy packages of cookies or unhealthy chips, because I know I’ll eat them in little or no time at all. Is hard to open a fridge with oreos and not want to eat them all. So, I’d rather make the healthy recipes of my favorite treats, then when I’m craving sweet I’ll eat that. If I can’t make a healthy recipe, then I’ll go to a store and buy a smaller portion. It definitively helps me to control my sweets and chips intake!

      yup definittely need to keep those things out of the house! Then again I don’t really crave them either. Although certain foods like granola are banned because I have ZERO self-restraint around them!

You have a super practical and flexible mind-set when it comes to eating healthy, which is how I try to approach things too. That burger just reminded me how long it’s been since I had one and now I’m totally craving it!

    Another great post Davida! My advice for eating healthier is to eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible (lots of fruits, veggies and lean meats) and avoid processed foods. I’ve been so adamant about avoiding processed foods lately that I’ve started making my own granola bars. Processed foods are so, so bad and I really have no desire to put them in my body!

    #4 is my favourite. I think a lot of people get turned off by the idea of living a healthy lifestyle because there are some people out there (who’ve been doing it for years and years, mind you) that make it look so complicated. I remember going buck wild with the nooch, chia, maca, lucuma, what-have-you powders… and I ended up spending a tonne of money on things that I touched maaaaaybe a few times. Keep it simple — that’s my advice. And that goes for the ingredients on the things you buy too.

    Eeeek I’m pumped to listen to your lovely voice chat about yumtastic eats! I lurveeee these tips, especially about getting in the kitchen. It’s kinda sorta freaking impossible to be healthy without learning to cook your own food at home. Loving that BDD rule…especially if we’re allowed to do two drinks instead 😉

    Firstly, you do not have to worry at all about standing on your soap box, I think this was very real, and honest post that gave some very helpful advice. I could not agree more! People think because I am an elite athlete that I just eat salads and pasta every day, but I do enjoy burgers, and especially desserts! You can enjoy foods you crave, and foods you enjoy, but just have to eat healthy most of the time.

    I also find it helpful to try take in as many colors in your diet as possible. The colors bring lots of nutrition in different areas! Great post 🙂

    Love it! One bad meal doesn’t make you unhealthy just like one good meal doesn’t make you healthy. AMENNNN. I definitely agree that eating healthy needs to be a gradual process and I can say that I’m learning to read ingredient lists more frequently. It just makes me feel better about what I’m consuming.

    Definitely good advice! Healthy eating does not have to be an all or nothing thing…eat veggies, fruits, healthy fats and lean proteins most of the time, and whatever the hell you want sometimes. I know I’d be a seriously sad person if I didn’t have chocolate or onion rings in my life at all….so I eat them whenever I feel a particular craving.

    This is such a great post Davida! Excellent points….all ones I would share as well 🙂 I think for newcomers to healthy eating its really important to remember the 80/20 rule so that they don’t feel like they have to give up their favorite foods. Im a cake lover, do I skip on cake at parties? NO I DO NOT! I eat really well every other day so that when that cake arrives, I can have an extra large piece without the guilt 🙂 BALANCE!

    I think that the biggest thing that needs to change about the world’s perspective on food and fitness is what you said about taking things with a grain of salt, even from experts. I’ve lived and died (not literally obvi) by the word of “experts” before, and it really didn’t do me any good. So now I listen to myself with tips from others and if they don’t work then fine. if they do, great! Ohhhh and ugh Special K. I cringe every time I see special K because that’s what I lived on for the better part of high school and freshman year. Sadness.

      I hate how long it took me to realize that experts don’t know everything! I went through a balanced bites podcast phase and legit was scared of oatmeal. OATMEAL?! I mean there’s truth and lies in everything. You just need to sort out what’s right for you. Oatmeal is right for me.

    Great tips! It’s an easy way to stay healthy while still enjoying yourself! And definitely agree about the cooking thing, as well. I don’t think you need to cook EVERYTHING, but I do think you need to have some healthy options in your house!

      This is embarrassing but I originally learned this rule from an article years ago that interviewed Lindsay Lohan…she only preached one though. I need two cause I like even numbers and one is just too restrictive. She also suggested pouring a ton of salt on your food when you want to stop eating…soooooo yeah. Thank god I didn’t live by those rules.

    I love all of these ideas, Davida, especially the BDD one. I never thought about that one before. I’d most definitely choose 2 drinks – unless it is brunch and then I’d choose 2 breads (aka waffles) 😉 I’m going to have to listen to your podcast!

    Girlfriend, this is perfect! It’s so spot on and even if you don’t claim to be an expert, this is expert information. This is how I live my life too. I don’t sweat when I eat fries and a burger (ahem, me too on Saturday!!) and I don’t think twice to eat healthy most of the time. It’s just lifestyle stuff that I’ve learned over the past few years. Not counting calories is something I’m super glad I’ve learned about because A) I’m in better shape then when I was counting calories and B) that shit be tiring! ain’t nobody got time.

    Great tips! I think that for most people healthy eating and living is all about moderation. I know that whenever I think about removing a food group from my diet I often just want it more. Like chocolate, a little chocolate is a good thing!

    My advice for eating healthier is generally to eat real food. Stuff that comes from the earth! Grains, beans, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds… all fantastic. I stick to a plant-based diet because that’s what works best for me. Also, if it has a million scary ingredients then I stay away. If I’m going to eat processed foods, I like to go organic. I like to know what I’m eating and feel good about it. That being said, I’m definitely not perfect about it! I can splurge with the best of them 🙂

    Excellent points girl!! Love number one 🙂 and all of them to be quite honest. Ughhh and don’t get me started on labels. Its horrific the things in nearly all the food in the grocery store. Especially Special K has a reputation of being “healthy”…ok. Have you seen the documentary Food Inc?! If not check it out, you would totally like it!     Giving into your cravings (within reason) is so important!! I can follow every other rule you listed, but if I can’t have a cookie or pizza once in awhile, then my diet doesn’t stand a chance. Once i started eating healthier, my cravings subsided, so when one strikes, I go for it and enjoy it. No guilt. No extra mileage to work it off. One of my tips for eating healthier is to stick to perishables. Most of my groceries go into the fridge, not in the pantry. That helps cut out a lot of strange ingredients and keeps me eating mostly fresh produce.

    So, there’s this running joke between my sister and my best guy friend–their nickname for me is “Chris Traeger”. If you haven’t seen Parks and Rec, that won’t make any sense, but basically he’s kind of a health freak who will do things like bring a vegetable loaf to a party instead of a cake like he was asked to bring. I really enjoy eating healthy food and I will look for ways to “healthify” recipes (some should just be left alone though…), however, I believe in balance and for me that means veggie burgers and fries (with a bun not that lettuce-wrapped bs which is impossible to eat) and Domino’s pizza (my favorite pizza ever) when I feel like it. Despite the amount of kale I eat in various forms (homemade chips, smoothies, and fresh green juices), I HATE salads. Ok, so hate is a strong word, but I will do a lot to avoid them on a regular basis. I prefer to add spinach to a smoothie or blend some kale with coconut water and frozen fruit, but you know, that works for me and I’m still getting the same nutrients. I think eating healthily is about finding ways that work for you. I love the BDD rule. When I go out, I usually do (unconsciously) stick to 2 of the 3, but I know if I have 3 of them, life will go on because I don’t eat that way every day or even once a week. 🙂

      exactly!!! I don’t have a drink with every meal, not do I have bread or dessert…well maybe dessert so it all equals out in the end. Also dominos pizza is the bomb dot com. Although there’s a chain in Canada that is awesomeeeee and now you have me craving pizza at 11 at night. Thanks Alex!

    Love this Davida! I like the tip about cooking….before I started eating clean/healthy I HATED to cook. Moved in with my boyfriend and literally didn’t know how to cook anything. When I started checking out labels and realizing how much healthier whole foods were I just slowly started to cook more and more, and now I cook pretty much everything myself. It just become a habit!

    Can I get this line as a poster or something? -> “no one is an expert on yourself but you” Or maybe as a tattoo? I feel like that is just so HUGE. So many well-meaning people leap from camp to camp, soaking up all the “rules” that go with that camp and blindly following them. Trial and error isn’t fun and it’s time consuming, but it’s the best way to figure yourself out. Get ideas from smart people, give them a try, and keep what works. All of these tips are amazing, and I’m sure will be very helpful to people just starting out.

      I think my parents would murder me if I got a tattoo but if I were to get any it would be that!!! There’s so many people who jump from one bandwagon to the next. While I am all for people experimenting, I am not about someone preaching veganism one week and then paleo the next! Ah well you live and you learn right?! At least that’s what I hope…you’re in the clear, don’t worry kim! Unless next week you eat a cow. Then I might get worried 😉

    I couldn’t agree with you more about the label reading & real food advice. If it’s hard to pronounce & sounds bad – then it probably is & people shouldn’t be eating it. It’s truly shocking & amazing all of the things that make their way into our “food”.

    Hell to the yes!! This is what it’s all about, and you don’t need a degree in this subject to be able to PREACH IT! I would live in your kitchen, it looks an awful lot like mine. I will probably be in the corner hoarding my cupcakes though.

    Wahoo, I get to listen to your voice! I will head on over after this comment. These are all great rules, I think the biggest one like you said is to start small and work your way up. Eating healthy can be SO overwhelming if you dive right in! The only thing I would worry about is people being afraid of something they can’t pronounce all the time. Fructose (which means it is a one sugar molecule- a monosaccharide) isn’t necessarily a bad crazy chemical! It’s like saying you’re afraid of dihydrogen monoxide (aka H20- water)! Overall, I agree that you would definetly want to eat as many whole foods as possible!

    Love this! So cool that they interviewed you!

    When I first starting paying attention to being healthy I so thought I needed all those extra special ingredients like what you said about chia seeds, nutritional yeast etc. Whilst some were great at the end of the day it wasn’t some magic ingredient I needed just an increase in fruit and veggies as well as consistently cooking at home more and exercising.

    Pinterest is a HUGE resource but definitely a black hole for me too.

    Great tips! I have never heard of the BBD tip but I think that is a great idea. I usually drink or eat dinner out but never do both. I also just try to stay away from the bread basket because I know it’s not worth the extra calories (I’d rather have an extra glass of wine ;))

    wow great tips! I really like the Bread, Drink, Dessert one. I’ll have to remember that next time I go out. Sometimes I get in the trap of, oh well I already ordered bread/drink, so might as well just eat whatever I want! I need to stop that haha
    I also like the tip about if you’re craving something just have it. It won’t damage all of your hardwork and you will feel better after you do.

    I think make 1 manageable change at a time. For me, it was a journey to get here. I didn’t just change everything overnight. And I made all my changes from a place of wanting to feel better… well mostly. 😉

    I love the podcast. What an amazing opportunity, and you got compliments on your food pictures! Nice job! Well deserved.
    You already know how I feel about healthy eating. Lots of whole nutrient dense food and smaller quantities of the less than healthy stuff. Hopefully all as chemical free as possible. Great post!

    Love all your tips, especially #4. It’s so easy to get carried away when you first start eating healthy and end up like, you know, obsessed and stuff. Moderation is the key indeed. Bread, dessert and drinks are ok too, of course.
    I mean: a life without dessert? NOPE.

    Oh my gosh, I completely agree with everything you said! Great tips. 🙂 I started reading labels quite a few years ago and it’s startling…sometimes food that is marketed as “healthy” really isn’t. I’m not saying don’t buy boxed food because I still do, but we should be aware of what we’re putting in our bodies and I’ve tried to limit my intake of “boxed food.”

    Yes! You said it perfectly, One bad meal doesn’t make you unhealthy…. nor does one healthy meal make you unhealthy! That is the key to it all right there! Great post!
    I love that you talk about not doing it all. Just the word super food makes me cringe! Kale is kale, not magic 🙂

    Love all of your post and recipes. Truly agree that life is all about balance, you inspire me a lot as i am trying to listen to my body and treat myself once a week and i found i am more happy and i enjoy my life more. Thanks for everything !
