Chewy Chocolate Strawberry Granola Bars

April 27, 2014

I never used to understand the concept of a “workaholic”. It actually baffled me how anyone could care enough about their job to let it take over their life.

I remember linking up to Spill-It-Sundays where they asked “What is your #1 thing you want to accomplish in your lifetime?

Here is my response: “I’d like to love my job. I want to wake up each day and feel like I have a purpose and something to contribute to the world.”

Chewy Chocolate Strawberry Granola BarsI wrote those words on December 1st, 2013. That day feels like a millennium ago. I could NEVER have imagined that a short 5 months later I would officially be a member of WA (workaholics anonymous). I love my job so much that I legit cannot stop working. So much so that C has banned computers after 9:00 PM so that he can actually spend time with me.

I spent all day yesterday demoing for Kewaza and as exhausting as it may be to be on your feet and on your game all day I genuinely loved every second of it. I came home and spent another 2 hours editing photos before prepping this recipe for a shoot the next day. Later that night C proposed going for a walk. The weather is finally nice enough for us to walk around our new neighborhood.

Something must have come over me because I decided to leave my phone at home, which I NEVER do. I have a fear of being disconnected. Despite this, spending that hour walking around with him, talking about our days made me realize how much my life has changed.

Chewy Chocolate Strawberry Granola Bars 2I realized that my life changed because I wanted it to change. I used to be too tired for walks and even if we went I spent the whole time complaining about how much I hated my job. Thankfully, those moments feel like a lifetime ago.

Clearly this post has nothing to do with granola bars, but it’s just what’s been on my mind lately. I suppose I’m writing this while eating one so that’s got to count…

What I’m trying to say here is that I’ve never been more excited to call myself a workaholic. I never thought this day would come!

I love this ‘Vida (stolen this nickname off Lee).

You really are a workaholic except for your YOLO’ing today. I am not really a workaholic by choice but by force…not cool.

I’m glad you have been able to disconnect and embrace it- except when you delay replies to me. Kidding. I need to take a leaf out of your book. Stat. and make this granola bar.

Isn’t it an amazing feeling? I can totally relate especially after being a stay-at-home mom for seven years and then going back to work part-time which consumed my life anyway and I was slowly miserable. I made the decision to leave and pursue what I love (baking, writing and going back to school for Nurition/Sports Performance program) and suddenly found myself immersed in a world that was work yet didn’t feel like work and became my life – and one that I love! And a book deal on top of it – never could have dreamed that going back to “work” as hard as I “work” doesn’t feel like “work”….And btw, I may make these bars today. I am back on a cooking/baking kick!

i know where you are this weekend! i actually just found out about the show last night which surprised me because they normally advertise this all over the place but i found out through twitter. i used to be a workaholic but things have changed over the years and while there are times (like now) where my job is really busy, i also have down time between phases of the project that gives me time to recoup. enjoy this exhilarating time in your life – it’s what will shape you/your career/your future.

I suppose I have to have a job to be considered a workaholic, don’t I? And yeeeees to the trouble disconnecting thing. Every time i forget my phone at home I have a minor panic attack. P.S. I ate like 12 chocolate covered strawberries yesterday…I’d be down for that flavour combo in a granola bar 😉

Best.feeling.ever. As maddening as it can be to get hit with cabin fever sometimes and have a hard time differentiating between down time and work time, I’m pretty sure I’d never be able to give up being self-employed. And things are just going to get crazier now that I’m close to opening my own health coaching practice. Eep. Hold me.

Droooool. These look so good. I’ll definitely be making these this week for my snacks. I’m definitely a workaholic. It used to be really bad a few years back. I would work 12-15 hour days on the most days. I’ve gotten better at disconnecting in the evenings now from my regular job now that I have my blog and go to the gym after work. I’ve learnt to force myself to have work/life balance.

What a happy post! I’m so happy for you and happy you shared this too. I’ve been struggling with my work for years now. I used to love it and now I hate it. I never have any time for myself and I find myself resenting it more and more because I feel like it’s stealing time from me. Time that I could be spending on pursuing my dreams. I know I want to be a writer and do health & meal coaching, but it’s a big leap from where I’m at. Hopefully, I will figure out the steps to take to make it happen. Thanks for the inspirations and good looking granola bars too! 😉

Disconnecting is super important for me. That’s not to say it’s easier, but I feel much better living in the moment without needing to see everything through a social media persons eyes (that’s a great shot, what caption should I use, hashtag, which one for FB, IG, Twitter). Some days I like setting all that aside and just really relaxing. It helps if I’m eating one if these too. 🙂

I think it’s amazing to love your job! Not many people know how it feels since they drag themselves to work at a place day after day that they don’t even like but feel obligated to do to make ends meet.

P.S. These granola bars look so delicious!

Sometimes I feel like a workaholic this year, but not by choice – I’m always staying late at the hospital because it’s so hard to squeeze everything into an 8 hour day! So 8 hour days sometimes turn into 9 or even 10 hour days. Plus I have to do readings and assignments on my own time. But once I’m done this internship I really want to find a better balance. I’m the kind of person that needs to keep my work at work so that I can fully relax in my free time.

Also you know granola doesn’t end well for me. Just pinned this. Have to go buy strawbs to make them ASAP then eat in one sitting.

Oops, I made them before I saw your reply so I added some baking soda just in case. They’re a little bit more fragile than I would like but I think that’s also because I added more strawberries. I do wish the bars were a little sweeter but I will definitely make these again. Thanks!
