I’m convinced I actually function at half of my brain capacity because any possible scenario where I might have to use it is saved by the existence of everyone’s favourite video player.

These Maple Chipotle Sweet Potato Wedges are case in point. I’m usually a sweet potato round or cube girl but suddenly I found myself with the urge for wedges. 10 years ago this likely would have meant using your brain to visualize how one might cut a sweet potato into wedge shapes. In 2015 I opened my computer, went to YouTube and typed in “how to cut potatoes into wedges”?

Maybe it wasn’t sweet potato wedges, but I’m gonna guess that instead of actually using your brain cells you often find yourself deviating to YouTube to answer those questions you just don’t care to try and figure out.

And if it isn’t YouTube, it’s Google…

I probably should be embarrassed for using only 10% of my brain cells, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. I also kind of fear for where I would be in life without their existence.

The other day, my friend Lindsay was over and we were discussing how in the heck people got around before Google Maps?  C reminded us that the concept of a map is nothing new (duh!) but considering I was definitely shopping for prom dresses (online might I add) instead of paying attention in geography class, my map skills are not exactly on point.

Without all of these programs I would probably have wandered all the way to China while trying to get to a store down the street and I would still be cutting my sweet potatoes into rounds instead of wedges.

Alternatively, I might have discovered that I’m a lot smarter and more capable than I think. I guess we’ll never know…

Maple Chipotle Sweet Potato Wedges

Cook Time 40 mins
Total Time 40 mins
Serves 4     adjust servings

Ingredients

  • 2 med-large sweet potatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1 T olive oil
  • 2 T maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 tsp chipotle chili powder (any chili powder works)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/4 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper pepper
  • optional: sprinkling of chili peppers

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Place chopped sweet potatoes into a large bowl and top with olive oil and maple syrup. Stir to coat.
  3. In a small bowl combine spices.
  4. Top sweet potatoes with spices and stir until well coated.
  5. Line a baking sheet with parchment or a silicone mat and place wedges on top. Make sure you don't overcrowd (use two sheets if necessary).
  6. Make for 15 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven and flip each wedge.
  8. Bake for 10 more minutes or until level of crispness is reached.
  9. Serve warm.

    I mean, if the word Chipotle is listed, count me in. And, yes, I know guac is extra :). Ok, bad joke done. I usually stick to sweet potatoes too, but this recipe looks too good to ignore and I feel like someone who knows healthy stuff better than me said that regular potatoes aren’t all bad.

    Oh my gosh the amount of discussions that come to a grinding halt the moment someone says “let’s google it”! Sometimes it’s nice to argue about who’s right 😉
    But yes, I need technology big time. And maps never told me where I am on them before. It’s the classic conversation “I’m lost”…”where are you?”…”ermm if I knew I WOULDN’T BE LOST would I?!” haha.

    My life is a little less embarrassing thanks to Wikipedia. I work in a male dominated world and definitely sometimes need to google or wiki words they use or some history/geography stuff at which I am sososo bad.

    Love these! I saw your recipe this morning and decided that the languishing sweet potatoes in the pantry must need used up. So I epicurized your recipe (sorry). I used the maple syrup and Mango Curry Dip Mix for the rest 🙂 Super yum! thanks for the inspiration (and the super yummy guacamole chicken salad that was my lunch yesterday 😉

    Oh the things I type into google are completely embarrassing, don’t even worry! I think collectively we are all getting worse at figuring things out for ourselves and debating as a result because answers are just a search away!

    I really do wonder how people survived without the internet. Your comment about google maps made me laugh out loud. Being in a new city I use that bad boy pretty much every day finding new routes and short cuts. I am the worst map reader ever so without that handy moving dot telling me if I am going in the right direction or not I think I would end up in China too. Now to the food – these wedges look buff – paprika makes everything taste so good!

    Just made these for my new fiance. We BOTH loved them! And they looked exactly like the pics. I cut each large potato (used 2) in half and sliced each half crosswise about 1/3 inch thick. I doubled the recipe and added a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg with the heat. I needed two cookie sheet pans. Then I made a simple dip of catsup and mayo. OMG! This is now my one and only sweet potato recipe! 5 stars!

    This is an amazing side dish. I used yams instead of sweet potatoes, and I baked instead of boiled them. The dish is sweet, but not overwhelmingly so, and the chipotle gives it a unique kick.

    To tell you the truth, I didn’t like to eat sweet potatoes before.The reason why I don’t like sweet potatoes is that I don’t like any sweet food.but when I read this article, I was drooling.I decided to try it again.
