What is Matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder of green tea leaves. Matcha is slightly different from regular green tea leaves as it is shade grown for 3-4 weeks before harvest. It is then ground up into a fine powder. It typically has a vibrant green color and has an earthy taste.

Matcha is consumed in many parts of East Asia as part of daily life and tea ceremonies.

Traditionally matcha tea is combined with hot water in a special mug using a matcha whisk (bamboo whisk). Sometimes another liquid is added such as oat milk, coconut milk or almond milk.

There are several different grades of matcha powder but I recommend sticking to a premium and high-quality culinary grade matcha. Matcha drinks are very popular but matcha can also be consumed in food such as desserts and snacks.

What Are The Health Benefits of Matcha?

Matcha is packed with antioxidants and in particular, catechins a class of plant compounds that help the body eliminate free radicals. Not only that, but matcha has been shown to help support the liver, the heart as well as boost brain health. Need help focusing? Matcha is got you covered! (source)

Matcha has roughly a quarter of the amount of caffeine as a similar-sized cup of brewed black coffee. There are also no spikes and crashes as matcha contains L-Theanine, a phytonutrient which slows the body’s absorption of caffeine. This can help prevent the coffee jitters. (source)

It is also naturally gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan.

  2. All of these look so delicious! I was on a matcha kick over the summer but for some reason I never ordered more. That’s got to change! Isn’t food just more fun to eat when it’s a different color? 😉

    1. Exactly! I love how bright it is! Was just telling Ashley that I also like to add it to my oats a) for the caffeine but b) cause it’s so GREEN!!!

  3. i’ve actually never tried matcha before, sad, i know! I must get on this, these recipes look too good not to make!

      1. Eberything with matcha looks always beautiful, tastes delicious. I drink matcha every day mainly because of its healthy benefits. But I always try to ask people that publish such recipes if they have any knowledge how much of those healthy compounds that matcha have are still present and active after baking or cooking and nobody ansvered me so far. When we prepare matcha tea we shouldn’t use boiling water but wait a few minutes so that the temperature drops and this way we obtain very healthy tea, we do not destroy healthy compounds matcha has. Logically if we bake or cook with matcha we kill everything that is the best in matcha and we end up with beautiful and delicious dishes but without those healthy properties everybody write in introductions to the recipies.

  4. You must have read my mind because I randomly decided to throw some matcha in my overnight oats (that I am having for lunch) today 😀

    1. YES!!! I love adding matcha to my oats…esp because I can never get enough caffeine. P.S. I’m still buzzing from this morning’s insanely strong 2 cups of coffee. I have a problem.

  5. After looking at this list – I DEFINITELY You need more Matcha in my life! What a collection – I am especially drooling over those Green tea chocolate chip cookies!
