Picking a favorite nut butter is like being forced to choose a favorite child. In which case, I’d choose almond butter.

…my poor future children. OY.

With everyone getting their panties in a bunch over the glory that is peanut butter, I’m over there in the corner hoarding my insanely expensive jar of almond butter. What can I say? I have expensive taste.

But for real, almond butter is the true joy of my life and is perhaps what I miss most when I’m travelling.

Oh wait, I totally travel with my almond butter.

When it comes to breakfast, I can be so so boring. I go in food ruts where I have the same thing for breakfast every single day for months and then one day wake up and decide that I’m sick of it. I vacillate between smoothie bowls and oats and occasionally pancakes, but no matter what phase I’m in, there will always be almond butter.

And as I’ve discovered, almond butter is to chocolate as peanut butter is to jelly. If that doesn’t make almond butter better than peanut butter, I don’t know what will. So basically I will be feeding future children almond butter and chocolate sandwiches…which hopefully will make up for the fact that I totally just picked favorites.

This Chocolate Almond Butter Overnight Oats recipe is actually an old favorite. I probably ate this every single day for a year a few years back. Likely BBE (before the blogging era), which would explain why it never made an appearance on the blog. But lately I’ve been getting sentimental and including some throwback recipes to old flavor faves.

In the process I’ve also been reunited with my love for this recipe. So onto an old/new breakfast phase! Not surprisingly, it includes almond butter!

  1. This was so good! I mixed the AB and chocolate in the night before, and had it as a post workout breakfast, topped with strawberries. I was worried it wouldn’t be sweet enough but it was perfect, and you can’t really taste the banana!

  2. I love oatmeal. I love almond butter AND I love chocolate. I’m going to try to stray from my usual breakfast to give this a try!

      1. My current phase is oatmeal so this was perfect timing! I made it this morning! Awesome! It will definitely make it into the morning rotation. Thank you for the new recipe!

  3. Hi Davida,
Quick question – have you made this w/out banana? I’m trying to keep to low-fructose, and eliminating bananas these days. Do you think it would still have enough sweetness / right texture without?
    Thanks!

    1. You could certainly try a low-fructose sweetener but in terms of texture, I’d replace with something like pumpkin that will add a similar consistency, without the sugar! Hope this helps 🙂 -Davida

  4. This looks so appetizing, and your photos are beautiful! It made me want to eat oatmeal again! I used to follow the eat-clean diet for a while, and it recommended just plain oats boiled in water, so after that I didn’t eat oats for a while :/
    Thank you 🙂

    1. Well that doesn’t sound very appetizing 😉 Oats definitely need some fun added to them! Hope you enjoy!

  5. Is it weird I love you even more for confessing to almond butter > peanut butter *gasp* But if I had to choose, cashew butter has my heart. Ugh I’m craving all of the good food right now. My parents and in-laws don’t eat like I do, or keep the same kind of food in the house. Let’s just say I CANNOT WAIT until we are able to get into our new place.

    1. I’m glad this wasn’t a deal-breaker in our relationship! Just come live here 🙂 Plenty of space in our 700 square foot apartment with a dog!
