Tone It Up Tuesday: Cardio Abs

July 30, 2013

How do you get yourself a glorious six-pack? Are abs really made in the kitchen? Or do they require endless amounts of crunches? How about cardio? Does that help? It’s really the question of the century right? Just kidding…but seriously how in the heck do you get those abs? It’s a combination of everything! I’ve heard so many times before that it’s 30% gym, 70% food or some variation of this, but at the end of the day it is 100% dedication to both.

Truth be told I’m not entirely interested in having a six-pack. Sure, a flat tummy is nice but my commitment to working out and eating clean is certainly not 100%, and definitely not enough to have a six pack. And I am totally okay with this. But I still make core work a priority for all it’s other non-aesthetic benefits.

So what do I do to build my core? I try to eat clean most of the time (I’ve talked a lot about the 80-20 rule before) and incorporate a mix of cardio and abdominal strengthening exercises. I’ve mentioned this several times before, but I am fan of anything that involves intervals. They get my heart rate up and into the fat burning-zone but it also means I am out of the gym a whole lot faster.

Now it’s time to work on your abs! I’ve come up with a cardio abs circuit that can get you in and out of the gym in 40 minutes tops. That being said, this workout does not actually require a gym because YOU are the equipment. Here’s how it works: Choose a form of cardio (I like to do this on the stationary bike but running, walking, stair-climbing etc…also work). Choose an interval ratio. If I am on the bike I do 20 seconds hard and then 10 seconds at a moderate speed. I repeat this for 5 minutes. You may opt for 30 seconds hard and 30 seconds moderate or some other ratio. Whatever works for you!

After completing the cardio portion move immediately to the ab circuit. I have already set the intervals for you: 50 seconds performing the exercise followed by 10 seconds off. Again, if you prefer another interval ratio feel free to change it up. Once you are done this, go back to the cardio and repeat until you have run through the circuit 4 times. I promise you will be a sweaty mess when you’re done with this!

Here is how to perform all of the exercises:
