Upper Body Burn!

March 3, 2013

I used to follow the philosophy that working out = cardio. I, like many other women was under the impression that lifting weights and any form of strength training would make me bulk up. I could not have been more wrong. Fortunately I came to my senses (with a little help from my personal trainer brother) and started incorporating strength based exercises into my workouts. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good cardio sweat sesh but mixing up my workouts with a little bit of both has made me stronger, fitter and more confident.

I will forever have a love of running but lately I’ve been out with an IT band injury so my workouts have involved a lot more weight lifting and a lot less cardio. Some days I focus on stretching and exercises for my IT band (more on that in another post) but being injured has definitely allowed me to build my upper body.

I used to NEVER train my arms, back, shoulders, chest. They aren’t really my problem areas so I figured what’s the point? I laugh at myself now when I realize how stupid I was. Skinny arms that can do 5 push-ups? No thank you. Now I love training my upper body. I find that I can really push myself and see results. On my way to Jennifer Aniston arms 😉

And with that here is an upper body burn workout!

Links to videos for all of the exercises:

Shoulder raises-I use 10lbs
Arnold Press– I use 25lbs
Reverse Flies-I used 7.5lbs
Deadlift + Row-I use 50lb barbell
Tricep Extensions– I use 15lbs
