Right now I'm in major preparation mode for season 5 of the podcast. It's hard to believe we have 4 seasons and 111 episodes under our belt. I say "we" because it is very much a collaborative process between me, @heyeilise (my editor), @georgiarounder (my podcast manager) and my girl Tanya (my operations manager - everything human who is better than all of us for not using Instagram lol). One of our top priorities is bringing on a diversity of guests, voices, and topics to ensure that That's So Maven is inclusive to everyone. And are we always successful at it? No. The reality of the wellness space is that it's white, straight and higher income. And well, so am I...⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠
But this is not an excuse. We have worked hard and will continue to work hard to bring you a more representative podcast, because if we want the wellness space to be inclusive, that requires people with larger voices to share their platforms with everyone, but especially those who are typically marginalized and not given a voice. I'm not trying to throw shade here but far too many podcasts in the wellness space only share their platforms with other white, straight, higher income voices. Something to be aware of...⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠
I am not perfect. And I certainly don't deserve any kind of award. Only 10% of my guests identify as black, indigenous, or queer. I don't have a single differently-abled person on the show and this is not okay. But I and we are trying. My hope is that as consumers you guys will demand more from the voices who represent you to be more inclusive. Remind people that wellness is for EVERY BODY and if you don't see yourself represented, be that voice!⁠

If I'm being totally honest, I never made an intentional decision to stop talking about my body. It was simply a natural progression in my own recovery. After years of manipulating my body, calorie counting, overexercise and not trusting myself, I then spent an equal number of years trying to undo it all. At first I needed to be surrounded by a lot of body positivity, and I'm forever grateful for the women who were willing to show up as themselves proudly and uninhibited in the hopes of inspiring someone like me. It gave me the belief that one day I might love my body too...⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠
And now I can say I do too. Not every single day and not in every single picture but the difference is that I don't judge myself for it and it doesn't motivate me to try and change my body. It just simply is. And truthfully, most of the time I'm not thinking about my body (it's simply a tool I keep healthy to do everything else I want to do!) which is probably why I don't talk about it here.⁠

A part of me has felt like I should keep talking about it because I have the opportunity to inspire the young girl in me who didn't think she was enough, but then I have to remind myself that this space needs to be authentic to me and my life and that truth includes not really wanting to talk about body image anymore. So this isn't a message to love your muffin top or flaunt that sports bras loud and proud (though I'm all for it!). Instead I hope to instil some hope in those of you who are still struggling with your body to know that if you're committed to it, one day you will truly not care and quite honestly be over talking about it🤷🏻‍♀️ And that's my truth...⁠

One of my greatest challenges as a yoga teacher has been coming to terms with the fact that not every student will like me...I had a teacher say to me once that "I am not in the business of getting people to like me but in the business of helping people to heal themselves". Will I be the teacher that does this? Maybe. Maybe not. But I still have to constantly remind myself of this every time I show up to teach.⁠

I am a people pleaser. I love when people love me. Yup I'm admitting this. And I'm guessing most of you feel the same way too (whether you admit it or not). We all want to be liked. We all want to be loved. But here's the thing: whether people like you or love you or hate you is irrelevant on how you feel about yourself. Because the best thing that I can do for my students (and my life) is to SHOW UP 100% as me...and also remind myself I have 250 hours of training under my belt😜⁠

  • Every time I pick up a piece of corn, I am reminded of how grateful I am that I no longer have braces. Can anyone else relate? You either eat the corn as usual and deal with the consequences or you have to cut the corn off the cob.
