Well I got my wish. However, this wish came with some surprises I wasn’t expecting.

First, let’s discuss the acquisition phase. It seemed like everything was going to go off without a hitch. The spiralizer was on sale and I bought it through Lexi’s affiliate link (we both win!). C also had an Amazon gift certificate he needed to use which he generously donated to me. I also succumbed to the 1 month-free trial of Amazon Prime which meant free shipping. And because I was going to be in the US a week later it was totally fine to have it shipped to Lee. In total I paid $6.00 for the spiralizer.

I should have known more ties were going to come along with this…

So the spiralizer arrived and I was totally stoked to get home and try it out. But of course it didn’t fit into my bag, AND it didn’t occur to me that I might not be able to take a bunch of blades in my carry-on bag onto a plane. Not my brightest moment. I ended up needing to ship it home so free shipping didn’t even turn out after all. At this point I need to thank C’s Mom who graciously shipped it home for me and reserved all judgment despite my lack of forethought. She’s the best!

And to make matters worse, I totally forgotten that I had signed up for the free trial of Amazon Prime and didn’t unsubscribe, which then led to me getting charged for it. $100 bucks later I have free shipping to anywhere in a country I don’t even live in. Epic fail.

Now let’s discuss the experimental phase. I was SO excited to whip up a bunch of delicious spiralized recipes but especially to make all the zoodles! Turns out, I’m actually not a huge fan of zoodles. Don’t get me wrong, I like them but I’ve yet to figure out the best way to cook them and make them not so watery. For now I’ve been sticking to a mix of zoodles and regular pasta which I think I actually prefer.

I came home from the market with a few too many potatoes (not that there exists such a thing) and thought “why the heck not?”. So I spiralized my potatoes and I was legit mind-blown by the experience.

By now you should know that I am a potato diva. I will only eat them crispy. Regular potatoes are a two hours process involving soaking and drying and temperature changes. For me, it’s worth it. But with spiralized curly fries, none of this is necessary! For whatever reason, the shape helps them crisp up and they actually cook faster. I’ve also experimented with cooking oils and find that olive oil is the best. My favorite is Spectrum Naturals® Expeller Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It definitely makes a difference in taste!

Now that I’ve started spiralizing potatoes, I’m not sure I could ever go back to regular chopped!

Crispy Baked Curly Fries

PREP TIME 10 mins
Cook Time 20 mins
Total Time 30 mins
Serves 4     adjust servings

Ingredients

  • 2 large white potatoes, washed & dried
  • 1 T Spectrum Naturals® Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • optional: 2 T chopped, fresh herbs i.e. rosemary or thyme*

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Spiralize both potatoes (I use this sprializer) using the blade with the larger triangles.
  3. Using scissors or a knife cut the potato "strings" into smaller bite-sized fries.
  4. Add to a bowl and coat with olive oil.
  5. Spread out over two parchment-lined baking sheets. You will need to use two as you do not want to overcrowd potatoes.
  6. Sprinkle with sea salt.
  7. Place trays in oven and bake for 15 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven, flip fries as best as you can removing any fries that have already crisped up. Swap trays before returning to oven so tray that was originally on the top is now in the middle and vice versa.*
  9. Bake for another 8-10 minutes.
  10. Remove trays and serve hot.

    I haven’t bought a spiralizer yet. I want to only to make these potatoes. Otherwise I save the zoodles for restaurants because as much as I like ordering them, I am with you that I probably won’t love them at home because somehow I will cook it wrong and it will be watery (which it sometimes is in restaurants too)…I totally try to score deals online and then end up getting hit with random charges like the forgetting to unsubscribe to free trials which I think are saving me money. But then I just argue the charges and refuse to pay lol.

    Damnit Davida! i was just saying yesterday how a spiralizer was the only kitchen equipment I didnt have, but wanted…..and I said “its okay, I will just use my julienne peeler, I don’t NEED that”…..but now I do! However will I make curly fries as beautiful as yours without it?! Yum!

    By the way, I also forgot to cancel amazon prime and had to pay….but I think you can cancel within 5 days…..if it has been less than that?

    So basically, the only regular french fries I will eat out of a bag are the spiral ones because they are SO MUCH BETTER than regular fries. And I love the idea of making them at home! I don’t own a spiralizer, mainly because I have trouble seeing myself actually liking zoodles. But now that I can make these….I may have changed my mind 😉

    I do not have a spiralizer, sadly. I gave myself a kitchen tools ban pre Australia – can’t get anything out there without it costing the Earth. As soon as I arrive, I am locating the nearest department store and getting a blender and food processor and perhaps a spiralizer now I have seen these little bites of heaven…

    This recipe looks so good! I basically make the same thing, but using sweet potatoes. I toss it in coconut oil and sprinkle with sea salt, pepper, and cinnamon before baking. Sometimes even drizzle with honey when I’m feeling wild. HIGHLY recommend 🙂 I will be trying this version soon!

    I am definitely going to try this as well as with sweet potatoes like Rebecca mentioned. In the meantime, I wanted to tell you to try the spiralized zucchini without cooking it. I don’t have a spiralizer but I have used a serrated peeler and a mandolin to make strips of zucchini roughly the size of spaghetti noodles. The serrated peeler gives a more flexible strip while the mandolin gave a firmer strip. With the firmer strips, I sprinkled with a bit of kosher salt, tossed a bit with my fingers and let it sit for a few short minutes. This resulted in the softer strips I was looking for. I tossed with a bit of olive oil and pepper and it was excellent with no further adornment. I have also made this salad with avocado and edamame, which made for a nice, quick and very fresh lunch. http://www.skinnytaste.com/2014/05/spiralized-raw-zucchini-salad-with.html

    Oh no! That is an epic fail! totally the reason I resist that prime free trial, I know I would forget too!

    I really want a spiralizer, one day I will get around to getting one! In the mean time I use my peeler to make ribbon zoodles ! I then place them in boiled water to sit for 5 mins, drain and then add to my stir fry etc. so no actual boiling and it works really well – hoping that would apply to spiralized zoodles too!!

    Curly fries?! How have I never had those before?? Now my life won’t be complete again until I do. Where to get a spiralizer soon now?
    The only similar story to your spiralizer experience I can think of right now is when a company shipped me a huge package of samples – technically- free of charge. Too bad customs think differently and I had to pay a LOT of fees. Major let-down.

    Hahaha you are too funny. I actually have a funny story about my spiralizer too. I asked for one and got one for Christmas this year, but when I was cleaning out my garage a few weeks ago I realized I already had one that I had bought at a garage sale for $2 several years ago (and it was brand new – never opened). Oops!

    I’m not the biggest fan of zoodles either – I’ve made them twice, and each time I got a stomach ache from all the fibre! So I retired my spiralizer and haven’t touched it in months… but this recipe looks like a good reason to dig it out again!

    This is the story of my life. When I think I’m winning, I’m actually getting myself into some silly situation that makes me feel like a dunce. Like just now— I decided I wanted to walk over about a mile to the prettiest study lounge on campus, but 3 minutes into the walk, I realized my awesome white shorts kept riding up, making me feel like I was mooning the world. So I had to go all the way back up to my dorm and change into athletic shorts. And now I’m not at the pretty study lounge because of all the time wasted.

    I don’t do the white potatoes… but I’d be allover this with a sweet ‘tater! Love curly fries.

    As far as “zoodles,” I’ve never actually cooked mine. I just toss them with hummus or whatever sauce I want before adding any other veggie or protein I’m eating. So good!

    I’ve been on the fence about a spiralizer (do I reeeeally need one?) basically since I started blogging. This changes everything. I genuinely only thought I could/would use it for zoodles, and I’m happy to eat my zucchini sliced. Maybe Santa will bring me one so I can eat all the curly fries.

    LOL my entire motivation for ordering a spiralizer was curly fries and onion strings! I don’t even like zucchini! I am going to have to follow your blog now and see what other non-zoodle ideas you come up with 🙂

    So, you may have worked this out by now, but I am 99% sure you can cancel Amazon Prime at any point and get a partial refund? I also made this exact same fail once, also sending something to Amazon US when I was going to visit family there, but I got a full refund because I never used it after the payment was made! This was a number of years ago so they may have changed it but it’s worth a try!

    Did the spiralizer work well for the potatoes? I’ve heard that some of the cheaper spiralizers only work for the softer veggies like zucchini. But I guess my friend did try a sweet potato, which is way more dense than a white potato!

    I tried this recipe with sweet potatoes, and sadly, it failed. I decided to squeeze in a shower during the first 15 minutes of baking, and when I got back, they were completely burnt, and the pieces that weren’t burnt were underdone. Any tips on the difference in cooking time for sweet potatoes vs regular?

    I just got the same spiralizer and I’m in all kinds of love with it! Zoodles are super easy! Just put them in a bowl with some sea salt for about 30 minutes prior to cooking and the excess water will drain off (similar to prepping eggplant). Drain and rinse before cooking (and sautée, don’t boil). I’ve made a few dishes this way, and on my last one, my bf actually actually asked if I mixed in regular pasta. It’s perfect. Give it a try!

      Hi Nicole! Yes, this recipe definitely doesn’t work with sweet potatoes 🙁 The starch content makes baking times different and I find I need to soak my sweet potatoes in water to release more starch in order to get them crispy. To be honest, I’ve yet to get my curly sweet potatoes crispy! My friend Lee has a great recipe for them though (not crispy but still delicious!) and I recommend you check it out.     I was also one of those people who was disappointed with zoodles. I’m going to try bake them or boil them to give them less of a “Raw” taste. It just makes me feeling like I’m making salad. Perhaps I am just too much of a carbs fiend. So, of course, when I stumbled across this recipe , I was like… YES… YES!

    They were amazing, though I think I cut them too thin. Will try them a bit thicker next time. I’ve never had curly fries before but I’m converted! So was my husband… and my in-laws!!

    Actually, these are pretty fantastic. I actually have a plan for poutine chips that I’m going to be doing tonight and was trying to decid what temp when I came across this but reading the post, I realize I might be able to help you. When I’m making zoodles, I curl them ahead of time and then sprinkle them with some good salt and let them sit in a bowl for at least a half an hour. It pulls the xtra moisture out of them into the air (especially if I’ve already turned my vent on), then I QUICKLY (high heat woo) stir fry them with olive oil before they go onto the plate, leaving the moisture behind.

        For the zucchini noodles i make angel hair. Cook garlic onion and mushrooms. Add the zucchini and fresh tomatoes. A little soy and teriyaki

    I love curly fries! I remember having them at the CNE as a kid and they were so delicious.

    Sorry to hear about your Amazon Prime charge, but rest assured you are not the only one with a $100 spiralzer. I bought mine in Toronto for $80 plus tax for a Westmark one. It just sits in the closet now, taking up precious storage real estate. I think these potatoes will help me get over my buyers remorse! *eats feelings*

    I love this idea and can’t wait to try it. I bought a spiralizer today and just used it for the first time to make a zoodles. They turned out fantastic! I read a tip (or maybe it was a youtube video… darn.. I wish I could find it to give credit to the person who posted it).. but anyway…. after she spiraled the zucchini, she put spread it out on a paper towel-lined baking sheet, sprinkled some salt, and put them in the oven on 200 degrees for 30-40 minutes. That got rid of most of the water and softened them. Hope that helps if you want to try them again.

    I love zoodles. My two favorite ways are raw in a seasoned oil or cooked in an air fryer.
