DIY Pumpkin Spice + 30 Healthy Fall Recipes

September 19, 2014

Want to make all of those fall pumpkin desserts but don’t have any pumpkin spice on hand? This DIY Pumpkin Spice recipe will save the day! Recipes for a single-serve and cups worth of pumpkin spice included.

Hello from Minneapolis! I think this is my favourite time of year to visit Minnesota. The trees are just starting to change and there’s a crispness in the air that is incredibly refreshing. If winter never came I think I could stay in Minneapolis in the Fall forever.

For many, Fall means one thing: pumpkin fever. I’ll admit, I’m a trend follower and I’m all up in the pumpkin. I’m obviously not the only one since pumpkin (the canned variety) is already selling out at stores. One day I’ll tackle roasting an actual pumpkin, but until that day comes I will continue to hoard canned pumpkin when I see it. DIY Pumpkin Spice // thehealthymaven.com #recipe #diyThe only thing more difficult than finding canned pumpkin in the Fall is finding pumpkin spice. People talk about pumpkin spice as if it’s grown in their backyard and then ground up in their kitchen. They also seem to think that it is available everywhere and while maybe this is the case in AMURICA, I live in its far superior/pumpkin spice barren neighbour to the North.

Finding pumpkin spice is about as easy as getting to a Trader Joe’s aka not possible. That’s a lie. I have found pumpkin spice in Toronto but only at The Bulk Barn, which is also where I conveniently went to stock up on spices to make this DIY version and my reaction was somewhere along the lines of OBVI/FML/I’MSTILLPOSTINGTHIS. DIY Pumpkin Spice Collage-FINALMaybe you don’t have a use for a big batch of pumpkin spice. I’ve got you’ve covered on this too. My hack version which I use when I only need a teaspoon or so always does the trick. I usually ball-park it but it always turns out great. I’ll prove it to you when I get around to posting my Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Blondies (sneak peek here!).

I guess I take it for granted that I am living in America, and it can be found anywhere….you mean the rest of the world does not have pumpkin spice creamer, and pumpkin spice oreos? hahahah. However, I do have all those ingredients, so I could make my own for much cheaper now, so thank you!

The first time I tried to make pumpkin spice cuz I couldn’t find it at the grocery, I went to bulk barn too. I portioned out the nutmeg, allspice and cloves into those little baggies and was looking for ginger when I sae the pumpkin spice. I was highly unamused lol

I don’t think pumpkin spice is available here in Germany at all. Probably because pumpkin is not that big of a thing here either. Ground ginger isn’t easily available either but maybe in health food stores.
Thanks for the fall recipe list, especially the ones with apple which is my favourite fruit all year round but even more in fall. An apple a day… 🙂

I love love love pumpkin but I do think it totally overshadows the awesomeness of apples that, to me, scream September way more than pumpkins do! I totally understand your spice frustration. When I lived in Aus, I could never get the American spice blends I liked. It was honestly one of the most frustrating things. I know, I have a lot of big and important problems in my life.

I’ve managed to find pumpkin spice at Loblaws (it’s the brand in the little red tins – I forget what it’s called and I’m too lazy to go look in my cupboard haha) but it’s crazy expensive at like $4 or $5 for the smallest amount. Your version would be like 10x cheaper!

Prepare to be shocked: I, the poster child for kitchen intimidation, have cooked with real pumpkin. I know! Crazy, right?! John and I carved pumpkins two years ago and I was determined to use the insides for something. The internet told me you couldn’t cook with carving pumpkins, so I said “FU internet, watch me!” and proceeded to make pumpkin muffins with the pile of goop and they tasted like HEAVEN. I mean, I followed a recipe so it wasn’t exactly creative, but this was at a time where “cooking” meant boiling water for pasta or microwaving a bowl of frozen peas (peas have protein, that was totally a legitimate dinner and I stand by it), so it was very impressive for me. Plus, no roasting necessary (that sounds intimidating and impossible). I did roast the seeds though. Does that count?

Here in Sydney Australia pumpkin comes from the fruit market not in cans.. We mostly use butternut squash or a variety called Jap. Deliceous roasted with meat and potatoes, also cooked alongside potatoes for mash. Not to mention pumpkin soup. Thanks for the spice recipe as pumpkin spice is unheard of here.

It still seems like magic that you can buy canned pumpkin in USA and Canada. We have nothing alike. And we only get pumpkins for a super short time. The season starts in September and is over in November. So we’re already facing sad times 😉 Pumpkin spice is the same. I was thrilled when you posted the recipe and I made it immediately. I already used up the first batch. I add it to way too many dishes. Thanks for sharing, this made my entire fall 😀
