Hello from Minneapolis! I think this is my favourite time of year to visit Minnesota. The trees are just starting to change and there’s a crispness in the air that is incredibly refreshing. If winter never came I think I could stay in Minneapolis in the Fall forever.
For many, Fall means one thing: pumpkin fever. I’ll admit, I’m a trend follower and I’m all up in the pumpkin. I’m obviously not the only one since pumpkin (the canned variety) is already selling out at stores. One day I’ll tackle roasting an actual pumpkin, but until that day comes I will continue to hoard canned pumpkin when I see it. The only thing more difficult than finding canned pumpkin in the Fall is finding pumpkin spice. People talk about pumpkin spice as if it’s grown in their backyard and then ground up in their kitchen. They also seem to think that it is available everywhere and while maybe this is the case in AMURICA, I live in its far superior/pumpkin spice barren neighbour to the North.
Finding pumpkin spice is about as easy as getting to a Trader Joe’s aka not possible. That’s a lie. I have found pumpkin spice in Toronto but only at The Bulk Barn, which is also where I conveniently went to stock up on spices to make this DIY version and my reaction was somewhere along the lines of OBVI/FML/I’MSTILLPOSTINGTHIS. Maybe you don’t have a use for a big batch of pumpkin spice. I’ve got you’ve covered on this too. My hack version which I use when I only need a teaspoon or so always does the trick. I usually ball-park it but it always turns out great. I’ll prove it to you when I get around to posting my Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Blondies (sneak peek here!).
- 3 T ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 3/4 tsp allspice
- 1/2 tsp ground cloves
For 1 teaspoon of pumpkin spice
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- pinch of allspice*
- pinch of cloves*
- Add all ingredients to a bowl and stir.
- Store in a sealed spice jar to keep fresh.
