Homemade Pistachio Butter

I’ve posted several recipes now featuring my all-time favourite pistachio butter. Every time I do people ask me where I buy it. To answer your question I do not buy it anywhere, I make it! I’ve actually done a post on pistachio butter but it was one of my first when people were either a) not reading my blog or b) turned off by my atrocious pictures. I figured it was time for a re-do.
Homemade Pistachio Butter
Like most food bloggers I have an obscene collection of nut butters. Most I make myself but occasionally i do treat myself to some of the pre-made stuff. I’m looking at you Justin’s Vanilla Almond Butter…Pistachio Butter is probably the only nut butter I have yet to find on store shelves. It’s all good though since I own a food processor and occasionally have the patience to shell 2 cups worth of pistachios. For the record you can definitely buy shelled pistachios, they are just pricey and I am usually too cheap. 
Homemade Pistachio Butter
Pistachio Butter is now a staple in my kitchen and frequently finds its way into ice cream, on pancakes and of course into my morning oats. I do have a favourite way to eat it though, slathered onto a ripe banana. Pistachio + banana is a winning combination. So get over your fear of cheating on peanut butter and try this pistachio butter! You can thank me later…

Pistachio Butter

Prep Time: 15-20 mins

Keywords: blender pistachio

Ingredients (Yields: 1 cup)

  • 2 cups shelled pistachios
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt


Roasting (optional):

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Spread out pistachios on a baking sheet.

3. Bake for 5-8 mins. Watch carefully.

To make butter:

4. Add pistachios and salt to a food processor or high-speed blender.

5. Scrape down sides occasionally.

6. Blend for 10-20 mins depending on your machine.

7. Store in refrigerator.

    Wow I didn’t know it was that easy! Hm might have put those too-expensive-St. Lawrence market-shelled pistachios to good use.

    I’ve never made my own almond or seed butter, but you make it look so easy! I really need to try it sometime.

    I’ve only had pistachio butter once but I loved it! 🙂 I think my overall favorite nut butter is probably almond!

    Pistachio butter is amazing! And I love the green flavor. I’ve made it at home before too and it really is incredibly easy 🙂

    I also really like homemade pecan butter. So delicious.

    This is amazing!! I love pistachios and must try this! For everyday, I’d say almond and peanut butter are my favorites. And although it’s a bit expensive for me, cashew butter is absolutely incredible every now and then.

    Ooh I’ve never tried pistachio butter but I’ll have to give it a shot- I’m yet to meet a nut butter I don’t like! I think the bulk bins in Whole Foods have pistachio butter as an option to grind. I made my first batch of almond butter yesterday- I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was!

        I have a vitamix and have been making my own sweet butter, and nut butters but I haven’t tried pistachio butter yet! That’s next. I’m heading out to costco for those nuts I love pistachios! & I’m going to try pecan butter next. Mmm Donna

    I’ve never tried this but it looks really good! I can’t believe it’s just nuts and salt! How easy is that. Although the hard part for me is getting my food processor out and setting it up!

    I’ve never tried pistachio butter, but I am definitely intrigued! My go-to nut butter is peanut butter. Such a classic, but so amazing. I’ve never tried making my own nut butters at home, but that might be because my food processor is of the mini (and somewhat terrible) variety.

    Nope have not had pistachio butter yet – but I have a feeling YOU wanna send me some rigt?
    You are a strong woman to be able to shell these pistachios and not plop them in your mouth…I bet this compliment makes you wanna send me that Pistachio butter all the more huh ?!?!
    My fav is Peanutbutter and as its not too pricey, I never really invested in a food processor…but probably need!

    I know exactly what you mean when you say you want a post re-do! Some of my first posts had great content, but the photos were non-existant, dark and awful, or not a soul was reading my blog haha! Your pistachio butter is a great idea, I’ll have ot add it to my “must-make” list 🙂

    I played around with a pistachio butter recipe, but it failed miserably 🙁 I think it was because I wanted to save money and shelled the pistachios by hand; those skins taste strange :S

      I think it comes out a bit better when you buy the pre-shelled but if you have the patience (which occasionally I do) to shell and pull off the skins from the pistachios its actually amazing!

    I’d love to make this but I definitely don’t have the patience to shell more than 10 pistachios in a row… And when I shell one, I usually eat if after a second… nope, I don’t think I can make this but wow, I’d love it because it looks awesome 🙂

    Ah, this is right up my kids’ allies! They are both pistachio lovers, and this would make a great after school snack for them! I have yet to try any of the Justin brand nut butters, but I do love me some almond butter, so I will have to give Justin’s a try. 🙂

    SO simple! I’ve never tried pistachio butter before but I’m a huge fan of the nut so I’m going to give this a shot when I get my new blender in the mail 🙂 Is it as creamy as peanut or almond butters?

    I love pistachios, I think they are probably my favorite nut. I haven’t tried it in nut butter form but i’m sure its fantastic. I can’t wait for the Costco to open near me so I can stock up on pistachios and make this.

    I love pistachios! And I don’t think an ingredient list gets more simple than that. Looks great! Trader Joes actually sells shelled pistachios already. They would be perfect for this.

    I have yet to try Justin’s flavored almond butters but the vanilla sounds amazing!

    I’m amazed that this has 2 ingredients. Like I could even manage that. I’m a newbie to the nut butter world. I’ve done the almond/peanut/cashew thing, but I think I’m gettting ready to branch out to bigger and better butters! Dreaming big here.

    I have actually only every peanut butter. One day I will branch out and try something different. I do love how easy it is to make nut butters. Add nuts and mix. The end.

    You’re too cheap to buy unshelled pistachios, I’m too cheap to buy a food processor..ahahh. I’m thinking of asking for one for my birthday, because I’m 12 and I still get gifts 🙂 This stuff looks delicious! I love pistachio flavored anything.

    I can guarantee you this will be made this weekend, thanks to a family friend bringing over a sackful of pistachios…although they are still in their shell :p

    Favourite nut butter is salted extra crunchy peanut butter. So good.

    I’ve made my own almond & peanut butter in the past, but never tried making pistachio butter! I’ve looked in the stores for it & have never seen it. Maybe I’ll have to give your recipe a whirl one of these days when I can shell out the money for some more pistachios! 🙂

    Oh my goodness!! You are crazy to shell that many pistachios….it takes me like 10 minutes just to get a couple done. Kudos to you! This looks great. Definitely have a soft spot in my heart for Justin’s almond butter though…I mean…ugh delicious!

    Pistachio is one of my favorite nuts – love the color and the saltiness – I would snack on them on my flights. I have never tried pistachio butter but I imagine it would taste really scrumptious as it looks. The recipe looks pretty simple to make, I love simple recipes like this. My favorite nut butter is raw almond butter, specifically the Cinnamon Red Maca Almond Butter from Jem Raw Chocolate, it is so delicous and it is based in Oregon. You’ve got to try this – it tastes like a beautiful cinnamon caramel butter.

    I’ve never tried or made pistachio butter, but it’s on the list for sure! Actually, that’s the main reason I’ve been trying to clear out the ol’ nut butter stash…so I don’t feel guilty for adding to it with homemade ones! 😉 I’ve been jotting down ideas of spice and nut combos for weeks now! I just hope I don’t catch my tiny little food processor on fire! 😯

    I’m what one might consider an equal opportunity nut butter lover! While I HAVE been pretty obsessed with coconut butter lately, but my heart will ALWAYS belong to the peanut…or better yet…COCONUT PEANUT BUTTER! 😉

      NEED COCONUT PEANUT BUTTER!!!! Why oh why do they not carry it at Whole Foods?!?! Also I have a mini heart attack everytime I make nut butter in my food processor. It’s like the little engine that could but one day he’s gonna stop chugging 🙁
