I’ve been on a MAJOR cottage cheese kick lately. I know it can be a pretty polarizing ingredient but if the texture doesn’t bother you then it is an amazing source of protein and actually pretty delicious!

My toddler has been eating these as her favorite snack for weeks now and I love that I’m sneakily packing in the protein when most of the time it’s a struggle to get her to eat anything other than carbs.

So if you’re looking for a healthier cookie dough that also packs a protein punch, look no further than this cottage cheese cookie dough bites!

Why Make This Recipe?

One bowl – that’s right! This recipe can be made in one bowl in under 10 minutes. The perfect easy snack.

High in protein – between the cottage cheese, the protein powder and the almond flour these cottage cheese cookie dough bites pack a mean protein punch.

Grain-Free – This bite-sized snack is made without any grains.

Easy Meal Prep – I love prepping a batch of these at the start of the week for healthy snacking throughout the week! Better yet, you can freeze them for a rainy day 🙂

  • Cottage cheese – you can use either full-fat or low-fat. Both work great. My favorite brand is Good Culture but you can use any brand. Curd size doesn’t matter since you’re blending it!
  • Maple Syrup – honey or even brown rice syrup are both good substitutes.
  • Vanilla Extract – I find that this really adds in the cookie dough flavor so don’t skip it.
  • Vanilla protein powder – see notes below regarding types of protein powder you can use.
  • Almond flour – note that almond flour is different from almond meal! This recipe requires almond flour which is made from blanched almonds. I like the finely ground almond flour from Bob’s Red Mill.
  • Salt – just a pinch but feel free to add more or less depending on taste preference and sodium preference.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips – I find the mini chocolate chips work best in bite-sized recipes but regular chocolate chips will work too if that’s all you can find.

STEP 1: BLEND

Add your cottage cheese, maple syrup and vanilla extract to a blender and blend until smooth.

STEP 3: ROLL

Using your hands roll your cottage cheese cookie dough into bite-sized balls (roughly golf ball sized). You should get between 15-20 balls.

Easy Swaps & Substitutions

Replace the chocolate chips w/ m&ms – for a monster cookie dough version feel free to replace same or all of the chocolate chips with mini m&ms.

Make a funfetti version – add in sprinkles or replace chocolate chips with sprinkles for a funfetti cookie dough!

Make them pumpkin spice – add in 1 tsp of pumpkin pie spice for a seasonal variation!

Use chocolate protein powder – replace the vanilla protein powder with chocolate for a chocolate protein cookie dough recipe.

Use honey in place of maple syrup – honey is a perfect substitute for maple syrup if you don’t have any maple syrup on hand.

FAQs

What type of protein powder should I use?

Plant-Based Protein Powder – you have a couple different options here. These are my personal preference.
Pea protein powder – my preferred choice. I find this leads to the most authentic protein cookie dough. I use the Ritual Protein Powder.
Brown rice protein powder – can sometimes be a bit dry but works pretty well.
Whey Protein Powder – Works great in these.
Collagen Protein Powder – Not my personal preference and be sure to grab a vanilla version otherwise there won’t be much taste.

How many grams of protein per bite?

This will depend entirely on the type of protein powder you use and the number of balls you roll out. In my case I use Ritual Pea Protein Powder and roll into 15 balls and it comes out to 5 grams of protein per cookie dough bite.

What type of cottage cheese should I use?

Low-fat or full-fat both work in this recipe so it really comes down to preference.

Do I have to use a blender?

I’d recommend it or your cottage cheese cookie dough will be a little lumpy in texture.

Do I have to roll these into balls?

Nope! If you would prefer you can just eat this cottage cheese cookie dough straight from a bowl with a spoon!
