Maybe it’s just me, but I think about the ingredients in my lipstick more than the ingredients in my other makeup. There’s something about it being on my mouth and thinking about physically ingesting the product… am I alone in this? I also feel naked without a lip product on. This can lead to quite a conundrum!

Luckily in the past few years, clean beauty has STEPPED IT UP in the non-toxic lipstick department. For the longest time it was just ILIA killing the game but now there are so many new options out there that are giving conventional lipstick a run for its money. So as the final clean beauty 5×5 I am reviewing the best non-toxic and natural lipsticks and lip products on the market that you won’t regret buying.

What to look out for in lipstick

While lead is maybe the most known ingredient to avoid in lipstick, there are actually a variety of heavy metals you should steer clear from in lipsticks.

The beauty industry doesn’t seem to be concerned with these heavy metals because of how small the application area is but there has been no safe level identified of exposure to heavy metal and repeated exposure can be really harmful. (Source)

Other ingredients to look out for include parabens, petroleum, dyes and synthetic fragrances (if you’re sensitive to it).

Want to hear all of my thoughts and see me try these non toxic lipsticks? I tried 6 clean lipsticks (including lip gloss and lip balm) and gave my full review and honest opinion of each.

See below for a more in-depth review of lip products made from natural ingredients.

The Best Non-Toxic Lipsticks

01. ILIA Color Block High Impact Lipstick $28

This is the OG non-toxic lipstick on the market and it’s one of my tried and true favs! If you’re just getting started in the clean beauty lipstick world, you can’t go wrong with this lipstick! It’s as close to conventional as you’re going to get but with good ingredients.

02. Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Luminous Lip Crayon $22

Application doesn’t get much easier with this lip crayon! It’s the perfect mix between a lip balm and a lipstick. It’s not fussy and perfect to bring on the go.

03. PYT Friends With Benefits Lip Duo $20

I’m not a huge lip gloss fan but if you are, this is the perfect product. If you want something that offers both a lipstick and a lip gloss, this lip duo provides both! It’s super pigmented and creamy. A great multi-use product at an affordable price.

04. Kosas Weightless Lipstick $28

This product is more of a stain so is the best long-lasting clean beauty lipstick I’ve found. It’s a powerful product… you’ve been warned! It’s super creamy upon application but then STAYS!

05. Tower 28 ShineOn Lip Jelly $16

Gloss meets balm meets color… aka the perfect trifecta if you want a pop of color, shine and hydration. Love throwing this on to brighten my face (and day!). It also isn't super sticky but still gives that shine.

06. Kjaer Weis Matte, Naturally Liquid Lipstick $30

This liquid lipstick dries matte and truly lasts all day! I love how creamy and nourishing it feels (aka it doesn’t dry my lips out at all!). It also is refillable making it a more sustainable option.

07. Kosas LipFuel Hyaluronic Lip Balm $18

Honestly nothing compares to this lip balm! I have it in clear but the pink balm also gives such a natural looking tint. It's insanely moisturizing too.

  1. Thank you for sharing! Can you share what the color name is of the Strike Twice Lip Duo you had on in the video?

  2. Hi, the liquid matte credo has synthetic fragrance. I’m not sure if by the time you wrote the article they changed the formula or you weren’t aware. But yeah, I came for liquid Mayte finish and sadly it has fragrance/parfum which is a major no for me since it hides under that name around 3k chemicals (most likely toxic) that companies are not required to label.

  3. Hi there. I was super excited to discover your site and, in particular, this article on lipsticks as for the past two years I’ve been suffering from extreme dermatitis of the lips due to an allergy to limonene and linalool. It took me over 18 months to identify the allergy through extensive testing. These natural citrus oil derivatives are in pretty much everything we use daily: home cleaners, paint solvents, air fresheners, cosmetics, soaps, toothpaste, deodorants and fragrances. Until two years ago, I had never had a reaction. But now, if I come into contact with any product with these irritants, my lips swell up, become severely chapped, tight and burning. This can last for weeks and is very painful.

I wanted everyone reading this article to know that ONLY ONE of the non-toxic lip products listed here is free of these two known skin irritants (#3 – PYT Friends With Benefits Lip Duo) – THAT’S how prevalent they are in cosmetics. Limonene and linalool hide in pretty much everything – and under alternative names too – and yes, even in “healthy, non-toxic” lip balms that I’ve purchased from health food stores.

So, all this to say, “non-toxic” does not mean “non-irritating”. It’s really important that we do our research if we have any sensitivities. I’m still learning about mine – and still on the hunt for lipstick, lip balm and lip gloss that are free of these irritants. I have hope that one day I will find one… (well, today I guess I actually did! Thank you!) And in the meantime, while the search continues, I am very grateful that sites like this exist, which provide full disclosure on all ingredients. So very important is this time of chemical overload.

  4. I’ve literally never been able to wear makeup because I’m allergic to everything I’ve just found your site and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that you’ve done so much research and have tested all of this because it’s giving me hope because so far I’ve had to use beeswax and food coloring to make lip balm for myself if I’ve ever wanted to even remotely try to make assemblance of any kind of makeup and that only lasts so long and it kind of gets on your teeth after a while because of body heat it’s high maintenance lol
