I am SUCH a baby when I’m not feeling well. There’s a lot of things I’m good at, but being sick is not one of them.

*blows nose dramatically*

Anything that makes me feel less than 100% feels like the plague to me. Typically, I just completely give up. I lay in bed all day, wallowing in my sorrows, while simultaneously drowning in the black hole that is YouTube. But not this time! This time I channeled all of my sickness into an epic hot chocolate recipe packed full of superfoods that would make me feel awesome instead of crappy!

And that my friends is how this hot chocolate recipe came about and I really do think it helped! I was back to my normal self in less than 48 hours, which for me is unheard of. I’m convinced all of the superfood goodness really worked it’s magic on my cold. If it can cure this sick baby, then it can basically cure the world. Drink up!

Superfoods in this Hot Chocolate Recipe

  • Raw cacao – Cacao powder is made from cacao beans. It is loaded with antioxidants, magnesium and iron. Make sure you’re grabbing cacao and not cocoa which is a more processed version of the cacao bean.
  • Maca powder – I feel like 10 years ago no one knew what maca was and now so many are including it in their everyday smoothies and drinks! It’s still a fairly new superfood on the market so more studies are needed for conclusive health benefits BUT some studies have shown that it can increase sex drive, improve mood and balance hormones. • Ground turmeric – The real star of this show (sorry other ingredients!) is turmeric. It is anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. The active ingredient, curcumin, has a bunch of scientifically proven health benefits like improving depression and chronic diseases. The superfood of all superfoods! (Source)
  • Ground cinnamon – Cinnamon? A superfood? Yes! Cinnamon is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties – so cool! (Source)
  • Raw honey – Ok, I said turmeric was the star but honey is up there too! It’s packed with antioxidants and has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Aka perfect for healing! (Source)
  • Coconut oil – Did you know that the fatty acids in coconut oil can kill harmful bacteria, fungi and viruses?! I knew it was great to externally treat skin conditions and wounds but had never thought about healing internally. Look for organic, unrefined, virgin coconut oil if possible! (Source)

How to Make Superfood Hot Chocolate

I’m walking your through how to make this hot chocolate with superfoods in an easy step-by-step video. For written instructions, see recipe below.

Tips for Perfecting Hot Chocolate

Don’t overheat! I recommend heating the non-dairy milk in a saucepan on the stovetop so you can control the temperature.

Whisk or blend. If you feel like you can’t get the powders to dissolve in the milk, use a whisk or blender to fully mix them in

Make in bulk. If you are a hot chocolate lover or making this for a crowd, you can pre-measure and mix the superfoods ahead of time. You can store the dry spice mixture in an airtight container and add to your milk coconut oil and honey mixture when you’re ready to whip up a batch!

Change up the spices. While I recommend using cinnamon and turmeric you can always add more or less or your own blend of spices. Feel free to get creative here!

Storage Instructions

If you’d like to you can pre-blend your raw cacao, maca, turmeric and cinnamon and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months. Then you can mix with your milk, honey and coconut oil when ready to consume. Otherwise if you’re making this hot chocolate with superfoods I’d recommend consuming right away while still warm!
