As it turns out, the government has the right to institute statutory holidays whenever they feel like it. Having lived away from the province for 5 years, I genuinely had no idea that yesterday was Family Day in Ontario. An arbitrary holiday enforced a few years ago to celebrate our families/help people get over their seasonal depression.

thai salmon saladTrust me, I am not hating on holidays, but a memo would have been nice! I prepare for holidays as though the apocalypse is coming, by buying ALL THE GROCERIES. Unfortunately for me I was the only person unaware that Monday February 17th was Family Day and that all grocery stores would be closed. This meant that oatmeal would be my main source of sustenance for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

But if there’s a holiday, I will celebrate! I figured the best way I could show my family how much I loved them was by raiding their fridge. I know…I’m a good daughter. Thanks Mom and Dad for saving me from starving on Family Day and you’re welcome for eating all of your food.

I get it now…I left my house with more food than I would have if all of the grocery stores had been open. So here’s the Thai Salmon Salad made from the contents of my parents fridge and the only other food in my house besides oatmeal, peanut butter.

Thai Salmon Salad

Ingredients (Serves: 4)

  • 2 6 oz cans of salmon (I used Alaskan Pink Salmon from Trader Joe’s), drained
  • 2 celery sticks, diced
  • 2 green onions, sliced (only white and light green parts)
  • 1/4 cup thai basil, chopped
  • 1/2 cup 0% fat plain greek yogurt
  • 1 1/2 T natural peanut butter
  • 1/2 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 1 tsp tamari (or soy sauce)
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • juice from 1/2 lime
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp sriracha (optional)


1. Remove drained salmon from cans and add to a large bowl. Using a fork, break up salmon until flaked and chunks are removed.

2. Add celery, green onions and thai basil.

3. In a separate bowl mix greek yogurt and peanut butter. Stir in garlic, ginger, tamari, sesame oil, lime juice and sriracha.

4. Add wet mixture to salmon mixture and stir to combine. Add in salt.

5. Garnish with chopped peanuts and green onion if desired.

6. Will keep in fridge for up to 5 days.

  2. I don’t normally raid my parent’s kitchen, but I do all snoopy and start grazing before/after dinner…which is usually why I’m there! They typically have things that I don’t normally buy…sugary cereals, cookies, candy…so I’m always grabbing a bite here and a nibble there! So in a way I’m still getting free food out of it…call it a mini-raid! Haha!

  3. HOLY F that looks amazing. I love Thai-anything. I would never think to make that on my own… now I have to go to TJs and get canned salmon.

    When I was in college, my mom would ask me want I wanted to eat for the next month, then would make all my meals and freeze them for me. I started cooking on my own a little bit and would raid her kitchen, my grandparents, and my dad’s. I still raid my grandparents when I go over there – my gram is a health nut too so I take cool new things she is trying!

  4. This seems to happen to me al the time. I forget its a holiday and that certain stores will be closed. Of course it is always when I desperately need something. Lucky for you that you have your parents fridge to raid 😀

  5. I understand where you are coming from – a holiday and the stores being closed – but I think it is cool that the stores closed. Here in the ol’ good USA – the stores NEVER close unless it is Christmas. But you can still go to Dunkin’ Donuts and the gas station. Weirddddd.

    This salad = perfection. Thai anything is my favorite, and salmon makes such a brilliant addition. I love it <3

  7. I saw this on Foodgawker and was like, wow, that looks amazing – someone had their thinking cap on! And then I was like, oh my gosh, its Davida! This salmon salad looks SO good, I really want a bowl for breakfast. Yum!

  8. Ah! This looks awesome. I looove salmon. Been trying to think of new things to do with it. I’m doing the dairy-free thing at the moment, though. Wondering if you might have any ideas of what I could sub for yogurt. I’m assuming that it’s taking the place of mayo in traditional salads like this but I’m struggling to think of healthy alternatives.

    1. Hi Sabrina! You can definitely find some healthier mayos out there and they would be a perfectly fine alternative! Avocado may also work or you could try a dairy-free yogurt like almond yogurt or coconut yogurt. I can’t say for sure but if you give it a try let me know! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
