A Day In The Life Of A Food Blogger

January 27, 2014

Another great weekend, but just not feeling like recapping it today. You can stalk my Instagram if you’re curious 🙂

I don’t necessarily define myself as a “food blogger” but for convenience sake we’ll use that title for today. Despite recipes being the hardest and most time-consuming posts, they are probably my favourite part of the blog. Workout posts tend to happen last minute because I got a nice sweat sesh on at the gym that I want to share and life reflections sit in my inbox for months until the words come to me. Neither require as much planning or work as recipe posts do. Today I thought it might be fun to show you a behind-the-scenes of what it takes to write a food post.

I’m using yesterday’s recipe for Pesto Egg Salad as my example.

1. Recipes come about in different ways. Sometimes I plan for them and pay a trip to the grocery store before cooking and sometimes they happen on the fly based on what I have on hand (or what I discover I have on hand mid-way through cooking). Today’s recipe required a bit of planning since I don’t tend to keep a dozen eggs on hand at all times. So despite the raging snowstorm outside I hauled my butt to the store.

2. I almost always eat before making a recipe otherwise I’m the hangry devil and no one wants to be around me. Before making this I ate a batch of Apple Chai Pancakes.

3. Then I cooked the recipe. I used the 12 minute rule for the eggs and winged it for the pesto. I was worried I didn’t have enough basil but 1 cup turned out to be just fine. A crisis/second trip to the store was averted. Celery and greek yogurt were thrown in because I know they taste good in my tuna salad. There’s really no method behind the madness…

Making Recipe4. I ate a large bowl of egg salad because I had to test it right? And it was awesome.

5. Then I set up the shoot. Sometimes I shoot with a tripod but I had granola in the oven and didn’t have the time to set it up.

shot 16. I usually try to set up the shot in 3 different ways and then shoot around 30-50 pictures. I’ve learned that with this number 3-4 are bound to turn out well.

shot 27. Then I am done in the kitchen. I put everything away and I hop into bed with a bowl of granola. I need fuel while I edit.

8. In my lair I edit the photos in photoshop and struggle with the font for approximately 6 minutes before I get distracted by Scandal and forget about the recipe entirely for a week. But first I text a picture of the sammie to Lee and Lex…followed by an ugly selfie.

edit 19. I receive a couple of emails asking for the recipe so I figure it’s time to get my act together and post it. I open up photoshop and decide I don’t like the font so I change it.

10. Then I enter the recipe into ReciPage and grab the HTML code before starting the post in WordPress.

recipage

11 .It takes me 5 minutes to write the post. It’s not my most eloquent piece of writing but I like for the pictures to speak for themselves, plus I only have 3 episodes left in Scandal and I NEED to watch them ASAP.

wordpress

12. I schedule the post to publish at 5:00 AM and then wait and see!

13. When I wake up I usually have a few comments which totally brighten my day and remind me why I love this so much.

14. Then I post the recipe to Facebook, schedule a few tweets on HootSuite, post a photo to Instagram and submit to FoodGawker, TasteSpotting and Healthy Aperture before I open up my BlogLovin to see what my favourite blends are up to that day.

15. In an ideal world I would respond to everyone’s comments on the post by the end of the day but that has never happened. I read and appreciate every single one and if I had a clone I would respond to each telling you so!

And that is how it’s done. Here’s a look at the final recipe:

pesto egg saladFor the record I do more than photograph food and watch Scandal all day, but I have to maintain some element of secrecy to make my life seem somewhat alluring…

Bloggers, do your days look similar? What kinds of blogs do you like to read? Food, fashion, fitness, other blog themes that start with f?

I love to eat, I love to bake and cook but I will never be a true food blogger. I give you a ton of credit because I cannot be bothered and have never been interested in photography. It is so much work but your end result in photos is terrific. Blogging is a lot of work – be it with the photos, the recipe prep and the writing yet it can look so simple and seamless until you break it down for everyone what we put into a post. I don’t even like egg salad yet your pictures make it appetizing!

Also, what blender do you use for making your pesto? I see the container in the first picture but am wondering what it is… I’m looking for a new one that is not too large and that looks like it would be just the right size!

My biggest issue is having natural light, especially since the days are shorter. I should probably invest in one of those special lamps or make a light box.

I’ve stepped up my game on my camera, tested out PicMonkey & Canva, but I still need to make one of these light box thingys. I’m going to blame Scandal as well for my lack of progress on anything. That, and the new show True Detective w/ Matthew McCoughnahey (sp?).

What a fun post! You are so smart for eating BEFORE making your recipes. I never do that – amateur!

I usually make the recipe, take the pictures, then eat the food. Or make the recipe, eat the food, wake up the next morning and take the pictures. I almost always write the post that goes with it later, most of the time before I edit the pics. That comes last.

My food would taste like crap if I didn’t plan though. Just another reason that you amaze me!

I tend to do most of my food photog on the same day (aka 2 days a week) so I’ll suffer through the first shoot aka the pancakes and then eat them and then make something else.

Winging it will come with time! And a lot of failed recipes. My poor roommates in college were forced to eat those…

I absolutely love this post. First of all, this recipe looks pretty delicious. Second, it sort of makes me realize that I’m not a crazy person for spending so much time on a recipe post and also validates my decision to only post two recipes a week. I’d much rather go play outside on the weekends than spend the entire day making recipe after recipe!! Also, I’m fairly young in the blogging life and so I’ve developed this method over a series of trial and error so I’m happy to see that I’m naturally making my way to a groove 🙂

Why is choosing a font so impossible? It is literally the biggest deterrent to creating graphics for me. I just don’t have that eye for design (if I did, maybe I’d have a design blog!). So instead I spend a disturbing amount of time fretting over it and convincing myself that if I don’t choose the right font I will be the laughing stock of blog world. So what I’m saying is yes, my days look similar. I should actually do a “day in the life” post to go along with my busy theme. Will you be mad if I totally steal the concept from you? Time to round this out by saying I of course read fitness and food blogs plus exactly one fashion blog (Putting Me Together, love her). Of course it seems most of the ladies blogs I read are within a five year age rage of me so I tend to relate to much of what they have to say and really love learning from them. I blog much more infrequently these days when a post comes to me. Haven’t really been planning at all – just when I feel like it. I know I’ll get back into a rhythm with it soon though. When I saw the recipe, it made me REALLY crave egg salad. Sadly, I don’t have any eggs in the house…or really anything else to make the recipe so I desperately need to go grocery shopping. I’m also going to try it with tofu and see how it turns out! Thanks for all your support on my last post, girl. Just wanted to let you know it meant a lot to me! <3

I wish every single food blogger had a mandatory post where they showed how they do their recipes! It is so interesting to see what I’m forgetting or not doing right. Now I want to do one! First things first, is to start cooking again. 🙂

Make everyone do these types of posts please!

It’s a scandal I’ve never heard of Scandal before! But then again the whole German TV program is a scandal in itself. We could really use some of the shows you have over there. Especially since Netflix isn’t available over here.
Whether you’re calling yourself like that or not: to me you are a food blogger – and a pretty awesome one at that. I’ve booked you for my wedding buffet years in advance after all ;). It was really interesting to get a glimpse into your recipe preparating and post-writing process. I wish I was as organized as you. And kudos to your dedication – I can’t say I’d have dared taking a step out into a snow storm ‘just’ to get food. If I’d been hungry, though …

Wait, you do more than watch TV and eat and take food photography with your days?! I must be doing something wrong 😉 And I can’t believe the patience you must have to take 40-50 photographs per recipe!!! I stop at 10 – I get impatient and say it’s good enough.

I would say I follow the same process, but I have been seriously slacking on recipe posts lately, not to mentioned I haven’t quite hone my food photography or baking skills AT ALL yet. I love blogg that have an assortment of topics, that way I get a glimpse into their lives instead of all recipes or all fashion, etc.

I LOVE seeing other bloggers set ups for their food photos. I legit went to buy paper that looked like wood the other day for a new photo prop, and a big black card stock for the backdrop..similar to what you have here! The outcome looks so sharp and lovely!! This sounds like the PERFECT day!

Loved this and found your process interesting to read about! I think I need to get my act together and stop making recipes when I’m starving. But you know what? If I’m not hungry, I usually don’t feel like cooking and being all creative in the kitchen. For this reason I don’t think I’d be a good caterer. I’d be all, “Yeah I had an amazing menu planned, but then I had a big lunch and didn’t feel like making it for you all!” Jusstttt kidding, if I have people to actually cook for, I don’t need to be hungry, but that’s not the case too often!
