Looking for an awesome veggie burger recipe? Look no further than these quinoa burgers made with quinoa, white beans and hearty ingredients perfect for your next burger night or cookout!

Grilling season is upon us which means one thing and one thing only BRING ON THE BURGERS! This includes my veggie burger folks who prefer to pass on the meat. I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m not a typical burger lover. I’d prefer to reach for a veggie burger or turkey burger any day. These quinoa burgers are no exception.

They have the smokey taste of a burger but without the meat and even though they’re not vegan (they’re vegetarian!) I assure you that your veggie lover will still approve. I prefer to make these on the stovetop since it’s still a little too early to start grilling here, but I’ve included grilling instructions bellow. Also these freeze super well so feel free to make in advance and freeze for when the weather begins to warm up. Any day now Minnesota…I’m ready!!

What You Need For Quinoa Burgers

These quinoa burgers require minimal ingredients but all are necessary for flavor and texture. Where possible I have indicated easy substitutions.

  • Quinoa – I like using white quinoa but you can use tricolor as well
  • Cannellini beans – great white northern or other white beans work too
  • Breadcrumbs – You can sub with panko or gluten-free breadcrumbs as well
  • Shredded sharp cheddar – feel free to sub with another cheese you prefer
  • Egg – I haven’t tried this with a flaxegg but you’re welcome to give it a go!
  • Garlic clove – minced very finely
  • Spices – paprika, cumin and sea salt
  • Optional buns and toppings i.e. lettuce, onions, pickles, ketchup, mustard etc…

How to Make Quinoa Burgers

STEP 1: Cook quinoa according to package instructions and allow to cool to room temperature or until it can easily be handled.

STEP 2: In a large bowl mash up your cannellini beans using a potato masher or back of a fork.

STEP 3:  Combine all remaining ingredients until they come together. If your mixture is a little dry add 1 tbsp of water until it’s sticky and can be formed into patties.

STEP 4: Using hands form 5-6 patties. Add a splash of olive oil to a large skillet and heat up over medium-high heat. Add patties to skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side or until outside is browned and crisp.

STEP 5: Add to buns and top with desired toppings.

Can You Freeze Quinoa Burgers?

Yes! You can freeze these quinoa burgers. I like to cook them and then wrap them individually in aluminium foil and then store them in either a ziploc bag or freezer-safe container. You can take them out of the freezer a few hours before eating. Heat up in the microwave or on the stove-top. Note: freezing them individually allows you to take out however many you prefer rather than the whole batch.

I have not tried to freeze them prior to cooking them, unfortunately.

Make them on the Grill!

You can make these quinoa burgers on the grill! I do recommend you place a piece of aluminium foil directly onto the grill and spray with olive oil. Cooking instructions remain the same – roughly 2-3 minutes per side on a medium-high grill.
