5-Star Reviews. Don’t just trust me. This frozen yogurt recipe has many 5 star reviews!
Ingredients In Frozen Yogurt
- greek yogurt – either full fat or low fat are fine. I prefer to use Greek yogurt as it makes a creamier frozen yogurt. I stick to plain yogurt so I can add my own flavorings but you can use any flavor you’d like!
- raw honey – the natural sweetener in this dessert. For those of you asking I personally have not tried maple syrup or agave but if you do, please let me know in the comments below!
- vanilla extract – a flavor enhancer. See different flavor combo suggestions below.
What Type of Yogurt is Best for Frozen Yogurt?
Really any yogurt works for making homemade frozen yogurt, however I like using Greek yogurt because the end result is super thick and creamy.
I also recommend using plain whole milk yogurt so you can add in your own sweetener and flavors but you could try using vanilla or your favorite flavor for a shortcut!
Optional Variations and Toppings
The options are endless when it comes to mix-ins and toppings! I like adding fresh fruit or frozen berries or cocoa powder for a chocolate twist but there are so many possible flavor and texture combinations!
Here are some yogurt flavors or combo ideas:
- peanut butter + chocolate – add in peanut butter to taste (I love peanut butter so I would add at least 1/4 cup!) and 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder.
- PB & J – add in peanut butter to taste + fresh berries or frozen fruit or jam.
- peanut butter + banana – Mix in peanut butter to taste + 1/2 or 1 full banana, sliced.
- citrus – mix in 3 teaspoons of lime zest, lemon zest and/or orange zest.
- chocolate berry – add in 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen berries + 1 1/2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.
- blueberry lemon – add in 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries + 2 teaspoons lemon zest.
- strawberry banana – add in 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen strawberries + 1/2 or 1 full banana, sliced.
- mint chocolate chip – mix in 1 tsp peppermint extract + 1 1/2 tablespoons of cocoa powder and/or chocolate chips.
What Kind of Machine Should I Use?
You do need an ice cream machine for this recipe! We love our Kitchen-Aid Stand Mixer Attachment but any ice cream maker will work.
Here are some other options:
How To Make Frozen Yogurt
STEP 1: COMBINE INGREDIENTS
Combine all of the ingredients (include any optional mix-ins) in a large mixing bowl or directly in your yogurt container.
STEP 2: ADD TO ICE CREAM MAKER
Pour the yogurt mixture into your ice cream maker. Churn for 35-40 minutes or until a creamy texture and consistency is reached with your ice cream maker. Be patient with this step! It can take a bit to get your ice cream maker to the correct texture (about that of soft serve consistency).
STEP 3: FREEZE
Pour into a container with a top and freeze for 2 hours.
How to Store Frozen Yogurt
Store any leftover frozen yogurt in an airtight container in the freezer for 1-3 months. It’s important to note that the yogurt will freeze solid when stored for longer than a couple of hours so I recommend thawing a bit before serving (typically a few minutes).
Note: there are no stabilizers in this frozen yogurt so ice crystals will form and that’s normal.

* I prefer to use greek as it makes for a creamier frozen yogurt
Hi, i have a cuisinart ice cream maker in which u put the mixture in frudge to chill 1st, then churn in the ice cream maker apx 15 20 minutes. Can i use this recipe with my ic maker? Would i just mix ingreds& chill, then churn. I am new to ur blog, 🖒i like ur recipes, healthy& clean. Thank u
Sugar syrup would work, and wouldn’t taint the flavor.
Not everyone agrees honey flavoured fro-yo is a winner.
This sounds awesome.Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful recipe.
I have several containers of plain yogurt and I decided to look if it could be used in an ice cream machine. Lo and behold! A recipe almost taylor made.. as in minimal ingredients, but I don’t have access to raw honey. Access meaning, pinching pennies cause mamma don’t have funds to purchase raw honey. It’s not healthy, but can granulated sugar be substituted for the raw honey? Anxiously awaiting good news to bust out the ice cream bucket and give it a spin.. and rock salt.. hmmm
20 minutes into the conversion, and I can’t wait! Kitchen aid recommends have the machine stirring first, then add the batter, I guess so it doesn’t just freeze in a clump. I added the cocoa, and I’m using Olympic Greek 2% plain. Thanks for the recipe!
Could be due to the water content in the frozen fruits as well.
Made yesterday and love it! A lovely flavour mix of sweet from the honey and tangy from the yoghurt. I strained my yoghurt overnight first and then followed the recipe. A keeper for sure.
I’m waiting for it to freeze?
This recipe looks great, so I clicked on your link for the ice cream maker. I always read the one and two star reviews first. If there are a lot of one off negative reviews, I don’t worry, but all of the one star and many of the two star are the same; it starts leaking blue liquid and usually after the warranty has run out. Doesn’t sound like a good purchase.
I called Kitchenaid about this (I just got mine, and haven’t had a problem yet). They said to not leave the freeze bowl in the freezer too long (about 24 hours would be fine), and to let it come to room temperature before washing it (not in the dishwasher!).
Can I use no fat Greek yogurt?
you can but it won’t be as creamy!
