I’m going to let you in on a secret: I start each morning with a smoothie not just because of the health benefits for me, but also because it’s an easy way for me to sneak nutrients into my daughter.

Try as I might to prevent picky eating, I have a toddler who has a mind of her own and that includes what she puts in her mouth. It also means getting fruits and vegetables (and even yogurt!) into her is a struggle. So every morning I make a smoothie and we share it. The rest of the day she eats whatever I can convince her to eat but I don’t stress about it because I know she had her morning smoothie.

This watermelon smoothie is on the regular rotation. As you can see below there are so many health benefits to watermelon but it’s also a great way for me to sneak in some added calcium and protein.

Let’s dig in!

Benefits of Watermelon

Watermelon is surprisingly high in nutrition. Here are some reasons to include it in your diet:

  1. It’s a great source of hydration – while watermelon doesn’t contain as much fiber as other fruits, it is a fantastic source of water with roughly 92% of its contents coming from water (source).
  2. It contains antioxidants – Including vitamin C, carotenoids, lycopene, and cucurbitacin E, which help fight free radicals that accumulate over time in the body (source).
  3. It’s high in vitamin A + C – 1 serving of watermelon contains 15% of your daily vitamin C and 5% of your daily vitamin A. Both are important for immune function, skin health and eye health (source).

Ingredients in This Watermelon Smoothie

  • Watermelon – Seedless watermelon cubes are key to this recipe. Ideally your watermelon is seedless to achieve the best texture but work with whatever you’ve got!
  • Greek Yogurt – I personally like to use vanilla yogurt but you can use plain greek yogurt or whichever flavor you prefer.
  • Fresh mint – watermelon + mint is the perfect taste of refreshing sweetness but you can skip the mint if you like.
  • Almond milk – Or any other non-dairy milk or liquid.
  • Ice – this helps to thicken your smoothie. You could also freeze your watermelon and omit the ice cubes.

How to Make This Watermelon Smoothie

Making a smoothie with watermelon could not be any easier! Simply add all ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth. Serve immediately for freshest taste.

Easy Swaps + Substitutions

Use frozen watermelon – adding frozen watermelon will make this smoothie thicker! Simply cut your watermelon into cubes and then freeze for at least 3 hours.

Add other fruits – add a cup of frozen berries (strawberries and blueberries work great) or tropical fruits like mango or pineapple for a tropical twist.

Add lime juice – for a little zing add a splash of lime juice

Up the protein – greek yogurt is a great source of protein but if you’re looking to add in more, you can always add a scoop of protein powder.

Swap the liquid – not a fan of almond milk or allergic to nuts? Feel free to swap in some coconut milk or other non-dairy milk or beverage (coconut water would also be great!).

Skip the mint leaves – if you don’t like mint you can skip it or replace with another fresh herb like basil.

Blend in some greens – looking to sneak in some greens? A cup of spinach or kale works great! You may need to increase the liquid slightly.

Can You Prep This Smoothie in Advance?

I personally would not prep this smoothie in advance and would instead drink it as soon as it’s blended. However if you’d like to do a little prep, you could freeze some greek yogurt into an ice cube tray and then store all ingredients (except almond milk) in a ziplock bag in the freezer. Just add the frozen ingredients and almond milk and blend as directed.
