Apple Pecan Hemp Hearts Granola

September 1, 2015

An easy fall breakfast recipe for Apple Pecan Hemp Hearts Granola. Packed-full of healthy ingredients like whole-grain rolled oats, pecans and Hemp Hearts this granola will keep you full all morning long!

There are moments when I find myself so immersed in this health-conscious, foodie-obsessed, quinoa-loving world that I forget that not everyone else lives in the same bubble that I do.

Moments where I find myself explaining how to pronounce quinoa (particularly with my Father…), defending nutritional yeast as a cheese supplement and the necessities of having a pantry stocked full of every seed under the sun.

The latter generally spurs a conversation regarding the difference between hemp, chia and flaxseeds to a point where people think I majored in the topic in college.

Clearly, I’m VERY passionate about seeds.

Packed-full of healthy ingredients like whole-grain rolled oats, pecans and hemp hearts this granola will keep you full all morning long!I think it surprises people how much I know about this stuff about as much as it surprises me how little most people know about this healthy-foodie world. Neither is better than the other, I’m just so ingrained that I basically have zero perspective.

What do you mean you don’t have a lifetime supply of Hemp Hearts on hand at all times?!

It’s true though, my pantry is stocked with enough ingredients to top a life-sized smoothie bowl. It’s one of my proudest accomplishments.

So when Manitoba Harvest reached out about collaborating using their Hemp Hearts, let’s just say that I was already fully prepared.

Seeing as I majored in seeds (okay fine, I majored in psychology…same idea), I frequently find myself explaining the value and health benefits of Hemp Hearts. Yes my friends, they are a member of the cannabis family and no you cannot get a psychoactive effect from eating them. Sorry.

What you can get are some pretty awesome health benefits. They’re super high in protein (2 tablespoons has about 10 grams of protein!), a good source of omega-3s and 6s as well as a low-carb alternative to other seeds (source).  It’s a powerhouse seed that everyone could benefit from.

But sometimes I feel bad for Hemp Hearts. I feel like they’re often overshadowed by the more commonly known flax or the always trendy chia. All three are amazingly beneficial for your body but let’s not favour one over the other, a’ight?!

If you’re new to the world of Hemp Hearts, try out this Apple Pecan Hemp Hearts Granola! It’s the perfect way to introduce hemp to your diet and also up the protein from your usual granola. And it’s amazing. Need I say more?

Gah sometimes I feel I should move to North America purely for the giveaways 😉
To be honest I think I’m still learning. I certainly know more than most outside the healthy living ‘bubble’ but it’s still a work in progress for me! Which is kinda exciting I must say.

And this granola looks legit. I think I am going to go on a granola baking rampage this weekend. Hopefully it starts cooling off!

This recipe comes at the best possible moment, as I just bought some hemp seeds and didn’t really know what to with it. This weekend I’ll try out making your hemp seed-y granola, it sounds da bomb! ;-p

(ps. I for one know why hemp seeds are overlooked in my part of the world: 1) it is hard to find some, even in most healthy and bio stores when I asked if they had it they just looked at me and said no, 2) when you finally find some it is VERY expensive.)

That’s too bad! I wish I could send you like 10 packs. I LOVE hemp seeds so I think I’d have a problem if they were hard to find and super expensive!

I have been using hemp hearts a lot lately to make homemade hempseed milk and this granola would go great with it! Thank you!

Sometimes I really do forget how much I know – I don’t mind when others don’t have a clue what I am on about but get a bit frustrated when they have a certain opinion on things without knowing the facts or they think it’s just a ‘fad’. No I don’t just eat kale because I’m trying to be cool – I absolutely adore it! Haha!
I always forget how handy having granola as a snack is! I must whip up a batch again and see if I can hunt down any hemp hearts in Australia – they certainly do have more ingredients available here than in the UK!

I totally LOVED this recipe! So much in fact, that I will be sharing in on my social media sites Friday, Nov. 17, 2017. I do a weekly feature called Foodie Friday where I share a Vegan-Friendly Hemp Recipe! I just found your blog last week, but I will be sure to save it and hopefully I will be sharing more of your incredible creations very soon!
