The Best Turkey Burger Recipe!
Fun fact: I didn’t eat red meat until I was 21. I tried it when I was little and hated it so I swore it off. I finally came around to it in my early 20s but after years of consuming turkey burgers I just personally prefer them to traditional beef burgers.
However, turkey burgers need to be done right to make sure they’re comparable to beef burgers. It’s all about getting the perfect balance of ingredients and not just stuffing your burgers with breadcrumbs (no bread crumbs in this recipe!). Using quality meat and fresh herbs is definitely the way to go.
So after years of perfecting the turkey burger, I thought I’d share my personal favorite juicy turkey burger recipe. So what makes this turkey burger recipe so great?
- They’re healthy – ground turkey has less saturated fat than traditional ground beef burgers so it’s a healthier option as far as burgers go.
- They’re gluten-free – no breadcrumbs in this recipe! This helps prevent the turkey burgers from drying out but also keeps them gluten-free (so long as you use gluten-free Worcestershire sauce)
- Packed full of flavor – We’re using very simple ingredients but they’re all quality so they really pack a punch.
Ingredients Needed
- Ground Turkey – you’ll want to use lean ground turkey (typically 93-94%)
- Red Onion – make sure it’s finely minced! You can also use yellow onion if that’s all you can find.
- Garlic Cloves – use fresh, if possible.
- Worcestershire Sauce – most are gluten-free but if you’re gluten-free or Celiac be sure to double check the ingredients.
- Egg – this helps to bind together your patties.
- Fresh Parsley – I prefer to use fresh herbs in these rather than dried but if you can’t find fresh you can use dried parsley or Italian seasoning.
- Salt + Pepper – to round out the flavor.
- Hamburger buns – or lettuce buns. You could also eat these turkey patties on their own!
How to Make the Juiciest Turkey Burgers
STEP 1: MIX INGREDIENTS
In a large mixing bowl mix together ground turkey with all patty ingredients until well combined.
STEP 2: FORM PATTIES
Using hands, form mixture into 5 turkey patties and flatten onto a baking sheet or plate lined with parchment paper.
STEP 3: COOK
Preheat pan, skillet or grill to medium-high heat. Place patties directly onto pan or grill and cook for 4-6 minutes per side or until no longer pink inside and internal temperature has reached 165º F.
STEP 4: SERVE
Remove from pan or grill and place directly onto buns and serve with desired toppings.
Can I Grill Them?
What I love about this recipe is that it can easily be made on either the stovetop or grill. You’ll want to set your grill to around 400º F. You’ll grill your turkey burgers for 4-6 minutes per side. Your turkey burgers are done when the inside is no longer pink and the internal temperature has reached 165º F. This is my favorite meat thermometer.
How to Serve Turkey Burgers
I like to serve my turkey burgers like traditional ground beef burgers: on a bun, with all the fixings! But here are some ideas for how to serve yours:
- Vegetables – lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles etc…
- Condiments– Ketchup, mustard, aioli, relish and other condiments
- Sliced cheese – add in the last minute of cooking to help it melt
- Avocado – can’t go wrong with avocado!
Storage Instructions
Refrigerator: You can store your cooked turkey burgers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just reheat in microwave or on stove-top.
Freezer Tip
You can also freeze your turkey burgers. You can either freeze your burgers before or after cooking (I recommend before to maintain freshness). Just place your parchment-lined baking sheet directly into the freezer for 1 hour. Remove and wrap each burger in plastic wrap. Store in a ziplock bag. You can thaw your turkey burgers overnight in the refrigerator. Cook as directed once thawed.
